SUMMARY

The Machinist sets up and operates CNC and conventional machining equipment to mill, drill, bore, ream, and finish parts produced from extrusions, bar stock, forgings, plate, and assemblies. This position interprets technical documentation, controls CNC programs at the machine, uses precision measuring equipment to verify conformance, and supports safe, efficient production of parts that meet or exceed customer specifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Set up and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines and conventional equipment using a variety of machine controls
  • Mill, drill, bore, ream, and finish parts manufactured from extrusions, bar stock, forgings, plate, and assemblies
  • Read and follow blueprints, mylars, engineering orders, statistical process controls, planning change requests, planning documents, setup sheets, work instructions, shop charts, and verbal instructions
  • Control CNC programs at the machine in accordance with established procedures and protocols
  • Select, install, and verify cutters, tools, tool holders, fixtures, offsets, and related setup components
  • Use precision measuring equipment to inspect work throughout the production process and verify customer requirements
  • Ensure company-owned precision measuring equipment is within its required calibration period
  • Maintain quality standards, identify workmanship issues, troubleshoot quality problems, and reduce scrap and defects
  • Perform preventive maintenance according to the checklist located at the machine
  • Use forklifts, hoists, overhead cranes, and deburring tools such as orbital sanders, angle grinders, cut‑off wheels, and burr knives as trained and authorized
  • Maintain machine tie‑in and production records; document problems and communicate them to the lead, next operator, supervisor, engineering, or programming personnel
  • Complete Planning Change Requests, program prove‑out sheets, root‑cause and corrective‑action documents, DRATS, and other required production records as applicable to assigned level
  • Coordinate with tooling, quality, engineering, scheduling, programming, and other departments to maintain production flow
  • Evaluate setup and run processes to reduce internal setup time, improve productivity, and enhance quality with supervisor or lead approval
  • At advanced levels, run first‑article inspection and tool‑proof jobs, assist CNC programmers with program optimization, support new projects, and plan upcoming setups
  • Train less‑experienced employees and provide lead‑person coverage when qualified and assigned
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area and comply with all personal protective equipment requirements
  • Handle and dispose of hazardous waste and chemicals as directed and locate and use applicable Safety Data Sheets
  • Communicate effectively with trainers, coworkers, leads, supervisors, and support departments and use work time efficiently
  • Work overtime as required to meet customer schedules and perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONSKNOWLEDGE

  • CNC program control procedures, machine controls, tooling, tool holders, tool‑setting practices, offsets, cutters, and fixtures
  • Precision measuring instruments, calibration requirements, inspection methods, and appropriate measurement selection
  • Shop mathematics, including SAE and metric dimensioning
  • Machine setup, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and production‑efficiency practices
  • Quality requirements, workmanship standards, first‑article and tool‑proof processes, and root‑cause and corrective‑action documentation
  • Forklift, hoist, overhead‑crane, deburring‑tool, hazardous‑material, PPE, and general shop‑safety practices

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
  • Level I: High school diploma or equivalent required; no previous machining experience required
  • Level I: Mechanical aptitude and a strong work ethic are desired; must develop basic proficiency on at least one machine or machine control and in the use of precision measuring tools, shop math, tooling, and setup procedures
  • Level II: Meets all Level I requirements and typically has five years of related machining experience
  • Level II: Proficient on one machine or machine control with working knowledge of at least two additional machines or controls; capable of completing new or difficult setups with moderate to minimal assistance
  • Level II: Completion of assigned training in blueprint reading, shop mathematics, statistical process control, or other applicable subjects
  • Level III: Meets all Level II requirements and typically has five to ten years of related machining experience
  • Level III: Proficient on three or more machines or machine controls and able to perform complex work, first‑article inspection and tool‑proof jobs, and new or difficult setups with minimal assistance
  • Level III: Demonstrated ability to train employees, assist with projects and program optimization, provide lead‑person coverage, and maintain required quality and efficiency standards
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is performed in an active manufacturing environment around CNC and conventional machining equipment
  • Prolonged periods of standing, stooping, crouching, bending, and stretching are required
  • Constant repetitive use of the hands, wrists, and arms is required
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance and more than 50 pounds with assistance
  • Constant exposure to general shop conditions, including machine noise and metal dust
  • Required personal protective equipment may include safety glasses, safety‑toe footwear, hearing protection, hard hats, face shields, and appropriate hand protection
  • Overtime may be required to meet production and customer schedules
