Ardurra Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, analytical problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant degree and professional licensure (such as PE or SE). Proficiency with structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD, and building information modeling (BIM) tools is commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for collaborating on multidisciplinary projects and ensuring design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are vital for designing safe, efficient structures and delivering successful construction projects.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary projects, which can present challenges related to balancing structural requirements with aesthetic or functional goals. Coordinating design changes, ensuring compliance with diverse codes, and managing communication across teams are common hurdles. Effective collaboration and proactive problem-solving are essential to meet project deadlines and ensure a cohesive final design. Developing strong interpersonal and project management skills will help structural engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What are structural engineers?

Structural engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. Their primary responsibility is to make sure structures can withstand loads and forces, including wind, earthquakes, and the weight of occupants. They work closely with architects and construction teams to create safe, functional, and cost-effective designs. Structural engineers use their knowledge of physics, mathematics, and materials science to solve complex engineering problems.

What is the difference between Structural vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, licensure (PE)Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, licensure (PE)
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building frameworks, bridges, and other structuresWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, dams, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsBroader industry application including transportation, urban development, and environmental projects
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for project scope and specializationMore general, encompassing various civil projects

While both Structural and Civil Engineers require similar educational backgrounds and licensure, Structural Engineers specialize in designing and analyzing load-bearing structures like buildings and bridges. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on infrastructure projects such as roads, water systems, and urban development. The choice depends on your specific career interests and project focus.

Ardurra provides comprehensive structural engineering for a broad range of public, civil works, commercial, and institutional projects. Our structural solutions balance practicality with innovation, to adapt to often difficult sites or unusual building concepts.

We are looking for a senior structural engineer who enjoys working as a mentor and leader to a team, partnering directly with clients, ensuring the highest standards of design, delivery, and customer satisfaction. The individual coming into this role will be offered support from experienced staff and leaders that will provide mentorship and support to someone ready to take the next step in their career.

Primary Function:

As a Group Leader, you manage a team of engineers and align their engineering goals with project or business requirements while taking a leading role in managing and executing structural design projects for buildings and facilities.

We are looking for someone who enjoys mentoring junior staff and managing the success of projects, as well as working closely with our clients and internal practice leaders to understand their needs and provide thoughtful engineering solutions. Your expertise will drive the delivery of high-quality, cost-efficient, and compliant structural designs while maintaining strong client relationships.

Primary Duties:

  • Lead structural design and analysis for building and facility projects, including foundations, framing, and load-bearing systems.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, providing expert technical advice, project updates, and addressing any client concerns.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated and seamless project execution.
  • Manage multiple client accounts and ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest engineering standards.
  • Review and approve design drawings, calculations, and technical documentation to ensure quality and compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain strong, long-term client relationships by delivering exceptional service and solutions tailored to client needs.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to support their professional growth and development.
  • Oversee project feasibility studies, risk assessments, and site evaluations for new and existing buildings and facilities.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, codes, and technologies, ensuring that client projects incorporate the latest best practices and innovations.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in structural engineering with a focus on buildings and facilities.
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
  • Proven experience in client-facing roles and managing complex structural projects from concept to completion.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes (e.g., IBC, ASCE 7, AISC) and local regulations for buildings and facilities.
  • Expertise in structural design software (AutoCAD, Revit, Ram Structural, STAAD Pro, etc.).
  • Strong leadership abilities with experience guiding and mentoring teams.
