Position summary

The Tax Manager owns Allied's tax function day to day, reporting to the CFO. The immediate priority is sales and use tax: Allied sells into all fifty states, and the Tax Manager will lead a multi-state nexus study, execute a voluntary disclosure program, and build the in-house compliance operation — registrations, exemption and resale certificate management, monthly and quarterly filings, and audit defense — running the function internally rather than outsourcing it.

The Tax Manager is also Allied's day-to-day point of contact with our outside tax advisors, directing and reviewing their work on federal and state income tax, and is expected to be technically strong enough to challenge and improve it — not merely pass it through. This is a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves role reporting directly to the CFO.

Key responsibilities

Sales & use tax — own it end to end

•     Lead a multi-state Nexus study to determine where Allied has economic and physical nexus and quantify historical exposure.

•     Design and execute a voluntary disclosure agreement (VDA) program across applicable states, in coordination with outside advisors and counsel.

•     Manage state registrations and stand-up ongoing collection, reporting, and remittance.

•     Build and administer an exemption and resale certificate program — the majority of Allied's sales are to resellers, and certificate integrity is central to the company's tax position.

•     Own the monthly and quarterly sales and use tax compliance calendar and filings across all jurisdictions.

•     Manage state sales and use tax audits, notices, assessments, and appeals.

•     Partner with IT (our internal ERP development team) to configure taxability logic, rate determination, and certificate validation within the ERP — including evaluating and implementing tax engine software if warranted.

•     Establish taxability guidance for the sales organization and train commercial teams on nexus, exemption documentation, and customer classification.

Federal & state income tax — manage the outside advisors

•     Serve as the internal owner of federal and state income tax matters for a multi-entity, pass-through group structure.

•     Manage, review, and challenge the work of outside tax advisors on income tax compliance, K-1s and owner reporting, estimated payments, and planning.

•     Own the tax provision and deferred tax analysis where applicable, and support the annual audit.

•     Manage federal and state income tax examinations and notices.

•     Support tax planning — entity structure, tax distributions, fixed asset and depreciation strategy (including bonus depreciation), and transaction-related tax matters.

•     Advise on transfer pricing and related-party transactions across Allied's affiliated entities.

Other taxes and the broader function

•     Own property tax renditions, franchise and gross receipts taxes, business licenses, and unclaimed property compliance.

•     Advise on customs duties, tariffs, and anti-dumping matters in partnership with the supply chain and trade compliance teams.

•     Build and maintain the tax calendar, documentation standards, and internal controls so that compliance is systematic rather than dependent on individuals.

•     Manage outside advisor scope, fees, and deliverables — and bring in-house the work that should be in-house.

•     Support the CFO on tax implications of acquisitions, divestitures, financing, and distributions.

Qualifications

Required

•     Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

•     Deep, demonstrable expertise in multi-state sales and use tax — including post-Wayfair economic nexus, exemption and resale certificate management, voluntary disclosure agreements, and state audit defense. This is the core requirement; candidates without genuine sales and use tax depth will not be a fit.

•     Strong federal income tax capability — sufficient to manage the outside advisor relationship, review their work critically, and contribute to planning conversations. Experience with pass-through entities (LLCs, partnerships, S-corps) and multi-entity structures is essential.

•     5+ years of progressive tax experience, including time in a corporate tax function and/or public accounting (state and local tax practice strongly preferred).

•     Track record of building or substantially improving tax processes, calendars, controls, or systems — not just maintaining them.

•     Ability to translate technical tax matters into plain language for non-tax audiences, including senior leadership.

Preferred

•     CPA and/or Master's in Taxation.

•     Experience in distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, or industrial products — businesses with high transaction volume, mixed reseller and end-user customer bases, and inventory-intensive operations.

•     Experience implementing or administering tax software (Avalara, Vertex, or similar) and working closely with ERP teams on tax configuration.

•     Canadian tax exposure (GST/HST/PST) given Allied's cross-border operations.

•     Experience supporting M&A diligence and transaction tax matters.

Success in the first year

•     Nexus study complete; historical exposure quantified with a documented, defensible methodology.

•     Voluntary disclosure program launched and progressing across priority states.

•     Prospective sales tax collection live in the ERP and operating correctly.

•     Certificate management program stood up, with meaningful coverage of the reseller customer base.

•     A working tax calendar, filing process, and control framework in place — and outside advisor spend actively managed.
