Job description

Who we are

Nobody calls a logistics coordinator to say things went well. They call because a $100,000 shipment of clinical trial medication has been sitting in customs for three days and nobody can explain why. Because a biologic therapy arrived outside its temperature window and the treatment has to start over. Because the patient is waiting and nobody in the supply chain can give a straight answer about the shipment's location.

This is the problem we're solving. We're a year in, tracking over 500,000 shipments (including for Fortune 100 customers), and we've already cut manual ops effort in half. General Catalyst, Eclipse Ventures, and Virtue led the seed. The angels are all former or current operators who've spent careers tracking down shipments themselves, such as Head of Logistics at Bristol Myers Squibb, CMO of Cardinal Health, President of Novo Nordisk US, President of UPS Air, and CEO of Uber Freight. They know the market is as large as the problem is broken.

What we've built works, and the most interesting problems are still ahead of us.

- Olivier, Co-founder & CEO

The Role

This is a player-coach role, which means something specific here: for the next 6-12 months, you'll be closer to the code than to the org chart. That means architecture decisions, hands-on implementation, and direct partnership with me on product strategy and technical direction. As we triple the team this year, you'll transition into leading the engineering org, but you'll stay close to the work and to customers throughout.

Staying close to customers is something we're deliberate about. Every engineer at ZoomLogi is in multiple customer calls each week. We believe engineers who've heard the problem firsthand make better product decisions than engineers who've read about it, and we've built this way from the start.

What we haven't built yet is the rhythm that makes customer proximity sustainable at scale. Right now too much flows through the founders: product decisions, architecture calls, hiring. The right Head of Eng will take ownership of all three, and in doing so, free the founders to focus on the things only we can do.

What You'll Own
  • The data ingestion and prediction layer. The platform ingests a continuous stream from carriers, forwarders, IoT sensors, weather, and flight data, stitched into a unified low-latency picture of every active shipment. We continuously scan for risk using ML and the mosaic view of each shipment to flag issues before they cascade. Getting detection to work reliably across hundreds of carriers, lanes, and sensor types is ongoing work, and the cost of a missed signal is measured in patient outcomes, not dropped requests.

  • The AI workflow engine. Once a risk is detected, AI voice and text agents embedded in operational workflows prevent or resolve issues end to end, with human handoff when needed. Healthcare logistics requires every AI action to be inspectable and recorded in an immutable audit trail (HIPAA, GDPR, SOC 2). The hard part is the long tail: a carrier rep with a thick accent, a customs query that touches two playbooks, a status call that needs yesterday's exception as context. Closing that gap reliably, at low latency, with every action auditable, is most of the engineering work.

  • Reliability. We've tracked 500,000 shipments for customers who can't afford downtime. Observability, incident response, performance tuning, and the scalable patterns that hold as volume grows: unglamorous work that matters as much as anything else on this list.

  • The engineering org. Hiring is a product decision. The engineers who join in the next twelve months will shape how ZoomLogi builds. You'll own that bar: who gets in, what they're evaluated on, and what the culture looks like when they arrive. We have opinions about this. We're looking for someone who has stronger ones.

Who Thrives Here
  • You've fixed an inherited codebase before. You know what it takes to raise the quality bar on a team that's been moving fast, and you know how to do it without killing the momentum.

  • You find the quality/logistics tension genuinely interesting. Most engineers have never had to build a system where a compliance team can halt operations over a single undocumented AI decision. You have opinions about how to design for that constraint (both what to build, and why).

  • You want to be in the code. For the next 6-12 months, this is a hands-on role. The org chart comes later. If the idea of being this close to implementation at your level sounds like a step backward, this role will frustrate you.

  • You're the kind of person who can say "I was wrong" and mean it. We debate hard, change our minds, and challenge each other, but always with the assumption that everyone in the room is trying to get it right.

This role is probably not right for you if:

  • You need clean architecture before you can do your best work. The foundation needs rebuilding, and that's part of the job, not a precondition for starting it.

  • Customer contact feels like a distraction. Every engineer at ZoomLogi is in customer calls. The product decisions that come out of those calls are the ones worth making. An engineer who wants to be shielded from that won't thrive here.

What We're Looking For

You have 8+ years of engineering experience and 2-5 years in a leadership role: EM, TL, Head of Eng, CTO, or something equivalent. You're backend-leaning full stack, strong in Python and TypeScript/React. You've operated in a Series B or earlier environment, or owned something from zero to one inside a larger company. You have a CS or STEM degree, or the kind of practical experience that makes the degree irrelevant. Experience in a compliance-heavy or regulated industry is a plus, not because we need someone who knows the acronyms, but because you'll already understand why the constraints are real.

The Team

Founded by a team of operators with deep experience in Logistics Tech & Healthcare (Ex-Uber Freight GM + Airspace CRO), joined by rockstar engineers from the likes of Abbott, Uber, Hippocratic AI, BAM (Hedge fund), and others. We're here to solve a real-world problem at scale, by making every critical shipment visible, predictable, and on time, so potentially life-saving therapies reliably reach the people who need them.

The Stack

Python, React/TypeScript, Kafka, AWS. We do a lot of low-fidelity prototyping, Google Slides included. LLM infrastructure and orchestration are increasingly central to how we build; the Head of Eng will have real say in how that evolves.

The Interview Process

We move quickly.

  • Intro call: role fit, motivation, what you've built

  • Technical deep dive: systems you've owned, architecture tradeoffs you've made

  • Onsite practical exercise: short, realistic, close to the actual work

  • References Offer

  • Location: San Francisco HQ (hybrid, 4 days/week in office). Chicago office also available.
