FOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Food Education Program Coordinator

Reports to: Director of Operations 

Primary Team: Resilient Communities

Classification: Hourly, non-exempt, anticipated 10-20 hours a week

Location: Hybrid, with some in-person meetings in Warrenton, NC and surrounding area 

Compensation: starting at $26/hour, based on experience; paid time off & health insurance available based on hours

Earliest start date: Tuesday, September 8

The Food Education Program Coordinator is a part-time, hourly position that will support two programs within the Resilient Communities team of Working Landscapes. Food for Thought is an after-school education program for middle and high school students, where they explore questions of the past, present, and future of agriculture in Warren County. This program pays students in the cohort a small participation stipend, and guides them through a community-engaged project over the course of the school year. This program is run in partnership with the Museum of Life and Science, in Durham. 

This position will also be responsible for developing a how-to guide on school cafeteria composting, to be designed in collaboration with Working Landscapes’ school partners. This compost program will be piloted by at least one school partner in the 2026-27 school year. 

Food for Thought Program (60%) 

• Recruit a strong student group to participate in program on an annual basis 
• Serve as primary point of contact for student cohort group 
• Lead, in collaboration with Museum of Life and Science staff, monthly Food for Thought program meeting
• Coordinate, with MLS staff, meals for monthly program meeting 
• Adapt existing curriculum materials to advance the program’s rigor and depth, including the community-engaged project 
• Lead the planning and execution of the Food for Thought Symposium in April 
• Maintain current partnerships with local schools, Cooperative Extension for recruitment and future collaboration opportunities, and establish new partnerships as applicable 
• Participate in external evaluator research, including focus groups and interviews 
• Coordinate monthly meeting of program partners (Working Landscapes & Museum of Life and Science) to manage program development and logistics 
• Support fundraising efforts as available 

School Compost Program (35%) 

• Research effective K-12 school compost programs, to be adapted for local school partners 
• Engage relevant staff at existing school partners, including Warren Young Explorers School, in interest, needs, and potential logistic challenges to implementing a compost program 
• Develop written and visual how-to guide on collecting, managing, and disposing of food waste through compost, to be shared with other school partners and other stakeholders 
• In collaboration with school partners, conduct a pilot program at least one school using the how-to guide    

Other Administrative and Organizational Duties (5% of time): 

• Attend bi-weekly all staff meetings and participate in all-staff professional development and organizational planning efforts 
• Participate in biweekly supervisor check-in meeting
• Provide feedback, insights and leadership to improve operations and organizational culture
• Stay abreast of relevant news and developments in the sector; engage in professional development.
• Contribute to Working Landscapes’ regional leadership regarding food systems and climate resilience; represent the organization as requested at events/meetings; cultivate opportunities for new partnerships that advance our mission
• Utilize company project management software and digital systems as directed
• Other tasks as assigned
