Job description

Job Summary Driver reports directly to the Webb County Veterans Service Officer and is responsible for daily transportation of qualifying veterans (and/or their dependents/survivors) to and from the designated service locations. And any other duties as assigned by the Webb County Veterans Officer. Major Duties Responsible for the transportation of qualifying veterans (and/or their dependents/survivors) to the designated service locations daily.

Update travel mileage and gas consumption logs. Assist staff members with scheduling these daily transportation services and maintaining the required ridership logs/sheets. Assist staff in coordinating with the Webb County Sheriff's Office to establish a volunteer system that would offer transportation services to qualifying veterans after working hours.

To inform the widows of the veterans and their dependents about benefits. Obtain information from claimants to prepare claims. Type and prepare VA benefits claim forms.

Call and/or write to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the state of Texas, the county of Webb, and the city of Laredo offices and officials, along with Veterans Organizations, to give out information or to obtain information. Relays information to veterans, widows, and dependents. Assist the Veterans Service Officer.

Attend TVC workshops to obtain up-to-date VA information. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Webb County Veterans Service Officer. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of county and departmental policies and procedures.

Knowledge of general office practices and procedures. Knowledge of local Veterans service areas is preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

Ability to manage time effectively and efficiently. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently in the absence of the Veterans Service Officer.

Ability to work with other department personnel. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the Public. Able to work a flexible schedule (weekends included) and follow standard program procedures.

Must have computer knowledge. Required to have both written and verbal communication skills. Required to maintain all local, state, and federal qualifications for this position.

Able to work irregular hours whenever necessary. Ability to communicate orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language. Minimum Qualifications Must have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.

Must have at least 2 years of experience in customer service. Must have at least one ( 1 ) year of experience as a driver. Must be a U.S

military veteran. Must have served in the armed forces for a period of more than 180 consecutive days. Honorable discharge from the armed forces is required.

Supplemental Information Complexity/Scope of Work The work consists of related driver duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the position's complexity. The purpose of this position is to drive along an assigned route to provide transportation services to rural residents.

Successful performance contributes to the safe and efficient provision of services. Physical Demands/Work Environment Occasionally Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, etc. Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.

Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions. Repeating motions that may include the use of wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Working in low temperatures.

Working in outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind. Working in noisy environments. Working in adverse environmental conditions is expected.

Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds. Medium work that includes carrying objects up to 50 pounds. Heavy work that includes carrying objects up to 100 pounds or more.

Constantly Moving to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another. Communicating with others to exchange information. Operating motor vehicles or heavy equipment.

Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. Driving a County vehicle or a personal vehicle for County business. Working in high temperatures.

Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing. Other Requirements/Information Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license. The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position.

Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required. This position is covered by Civil Service; therefore, is subject to the Civil Service Rules and Regulations in addition to all other Webb County policies. Valid Texas Driver's License* *If the applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver's License must be obtained prior to employment.
