Job description

Waterloo, Indiana (about 30 miles north of Fort Wayne)

Walker Farms is looking for a mechanically skilled team member who enjoys maintaining and working on equipment as much as operating it.

We are a progressive, diversified family farm in Waterloo, Indiana. In addition to row crops, our operation includes excavating and tiling, seed sales, large square straw, and extensive use of modern equipment and precision agriculture technology. This provides a wide variety of work throughout the year.

This is a hands-on farm operations position with a strong mechanical focus. The successful candidate will operate modern equipment during planting, spraying, harvest, and other seasonal work while taking a lead role in equipment maintenance, diagnostics, and repair. We place a high value on equipment readiness, preventative maintenance, and quality work.

The Person We Are Looking For

We are looking for someone capable of maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing equipment who takes pride in doing the job right. A formal mechanic background or extensive farm experience is not required for the right candidate.

Just as important, this person must be a team player. We are looking for someone who willingly shares knowledge, helps others, communicates openly, and understands that the entire operation succeeds or fails as a team.

What You Will Do

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain farm, construction, grain handling, and other equipment used throughout the operation.
  • Take an active role in preventative maintenance, seasonal inspections, and equipment readiness.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic equipment problems.
  • Operate modern farm equipment such as tractors, combines, planters, self-propelled sprayers, and other farm, agriculture, and construction equipment.
  • Participate in planting, spraying, harvest, and other seasonal farm and agriculture operations.
  • Communicate clearly with management about equipment condition, repair needs, and downtime.
  • Learn and use precision agriculture and application systems. Previous spraying experience is helpful, but not required.
  • Work alongside other team members, share mechanical knowledge, and help improve the capabilities of the team.
  • Fabricate, modify, and improve equipment or systems when practical.
  • Complete basic written and electronic maintenance and operational records.

This Position May Be a Good Fit If You:

  • Have integrity and do the right thing even when no one is watching.
  • Enjoy maintaining, repairing, and operating equipment.
  • Enjoy diagnosing difficult problems.
  • Take pride in preventative maintenance and equipment reliability.
  • Work well with others and value being part of a strong team.
  • Take initiative while communicating and staying aligned with management.
  • Enjoy variety and learning new equipment, technology, and skills.
  • Stay calm, think clearly, and keep working through problems even under pressure.
  • Are willing to work extended hours during planting, harvest, and other critical seasonal periods.

Experience & Background

Strong mechanical ability is more important to us than a specific job title or industry background. Mechanical skills developed through agriculture, heavy equipment, diesel, construction, or other experience could be a strong fit for this position.

Experience operating large equipment is preferred. Additional skills or experience that could be valuable to our operation include CDL, welding and fabrication, precision ag, electrical diagnostics, and application experience.

What We Offer

Competitive compensation based on experience and ability, health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off. This is an opportunity to work on and operate a wide variety of modern equipment and become a valued part of a diversified family operation where your work directly impacts the success of the business.
