Vet Path is a Phoenix-based veterinary diagnostic laboratory delivering accurate, timely, and clinically meaningful pathology services to referring veterinarians, specialty hospitals, and research partners. We pair rigorous diagnostic standards with a collaborative, growth-oriented culture. As we expand our caseload and capabilities, we are seeking a board-certified (or board-eligible) veterinary pathologist to join our team in either anatomic or clinical pathology.
Position Summary
The Veterinary Pathologist is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic interpretations across our caseload, communicating findings clearly to referring clinicians, and helping advance the laboratory’s diagnostic quality and service standards. We welcome candidates specializing in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, or both. Your specialty focus will shape your day-to-day responsibilities, and we are happy to tailor the role accordingly.
Key Responsibilities
For Anatomic Pathologists:
• Perform gross and histopathologic examination of surgical biopsies, necropsy specimens, and cytology referrals
• Render accurate, well-supported diagnoses with clear, actionable reporting
• Conduct necropsies and correlate gross findings with histopathology
• Recommend and interpret special stains, immunohistochemistry, and ancillary testing as needed
For Clinical Pathologists:
• Interpret hematology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, and endocrine panels
• Evaluate cytology specimens (fine-needle aspirates, fluids, bone marrow) and provide diagnostic interpretation
• Oversee quality control and instrument performance for the clinical pathology section
• Provide consultative support on test selection and result interpretation
For All Pathologists:
• Communicate findings and consult directly with referring veterinarians
• Maintain accurate, timely turnaround on diagnostic reports
• Participate in laboratory quality assurance and continuous improvement
• Contribute to method validation, protocol development, and case review
• Stay current with advances in veterinary diagnostic pathology
• Support a collegial, service-oriented laboratory environment
Required Qualifications
• DVM, VMD, or equivalent veterinary degree
• Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) in Anatomic Pathology or Clinical Pathology — board-eligible candidates with a clear certification timeline will be considered
• Active or obtainable veterinary license (or eligibility) as required for practice in Arizona
• Strong diagnostic judgment and attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to manage caseload and meet turnaround commitments
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in a commercial or reference diagnostic laboratory setting
• Familiarity with digital pathology / whole-slide imaging and modern LIS platforms
• Comfort consulting directly with clinicians and building referral relationships
• Interest in contributing to laboratory growth, new test development, or training
