This is a position with the Prototype and Manufacturing Division (PMD) machine shop at NAVAIR Lakehurst. The Prototype and Manufacturing Division provides critical hardware to the fleet. We overhaul arresting engines and launch valves and are the sole source of supply for the cables used for aircraft arrestment (i.e., purchase cables and cross deck pendants), we manufacture hardware in response to fleet emergencies, and we manufacture a wide range of support equipment and test this equipment appropriately. We are the sole source of supply and last source of supply for critical hardware that is essential to Navy Fleet operations.

PMD produces a large range of machined components from small components approximately one inch in size to large frames and equipment bases that are over 30 feet long. This position involves the operation of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and various electric and pneumatic hand tools, and requires the judgment and experience to handle the shop's most complex and critical work with minimal oversight.

The Senior Machinist (Machinist V) independently sets up and operates a full range of manual and CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments, including first-article and low-tolerance/high-criticality components. This position uses manual and CNC machine tools (e.g., jig borer, grinding machine, engine lathe, milling machine) to machine metal for both products and items for use as jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds. Work typically involves independently planning and performing the most difficult machining operations, which require complex setups, non-standard approaches, and a very high degree of accuracy on critical fleet hardware. This includes setting up machine tools (e.g., installing cutting tools and adjusting guides, stops, working tables, and other controls to handle the size of stock to be machined; determining proper feeds, speeds, tooling, and operation sequence, or developing sequences not fully prescribed in drawings, blueprints, or layouts); using a full range of precision measuring instruments; and troubleshooting setup, tooling, or programming issues without direct supervision.

• Independently sets up and operates a full range of manual and CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments, including complex, low-tolerance, and mission-critical components.
• Uses manual and CNC machine tools (e.g., jig borer, grinding machine, engine lathe, milling machine) to machine metal for both products and items for use as jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, gauges, or metal dies or molds.
• Plans and performs the most difficult machining operations independently, including complex or non-standard setups, and exercises sound judgment in resolving problems where drawings, blueprints, or layouts do not fully prescribe the approach.
• Serves as a technical resource and mentor to junior and mid-level machinists, providing guidance on setups, troubleshooting, and quality standards; may review or verify the work of less experienced machinists.
• Identifies and recommends process improvements, tooling changes, or efficiency gains based on shop-floor experience.
• Responsible for aiding in own self-development and the development of junior staff by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company, and by contributing to on-the-job training of others.
• Plans daily and multi-day activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description, and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize personal and team output.
• Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and co-workers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; relevant technical/vocational certification preferred.
• Minimum of fifteen (15) years' relevant experience with manual and CNC set-up and operation at a level obtained working in a machine shop, including demonstrated experience independently machining complex, close-tolerance, or mission-critical components.
• Advanced understanding of Fanuc control systems.
• Advanced programming and troubleshooting skills using MasterCam, including editing and optimizing programs at the machine.
• Demonstrated ability to independently read, interpret, and work from complex drawings, blueprints, and prints, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
• Ability to independently plan machining sequences and select tooling, feeds, and speeds without prescriptive guidance.
• Ability to operate equipment based on general or minimal instruction.
• Advanced skill with precision measuring instruments and inspection methods to confirm work piece dimensions on close-tolerance work.
• Strong math skills, including the ability to calculate distances, angles, take-offs, and geometric relationships.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced machinists.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance, and to apply these skills to complex geometric and tolerance calculations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, including on non-routine or first-time setups. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables independently.
