About This Job
As a Patient Care Technician in the Operating Room (OR), you play a critical role in ensuring patient safety and supporting surgical teams. You provide direct patient care, prepare the surgical environment, and maintain sterile conditions, directly contributing to successful surgical outcomes. Your attention to detail and compassionate approach enhances the patient experience during a vulnerable time. This role demands precision, quick thinking, and a commitment to the highest standards of care within a dynamic environment.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides direct patient care, ensuring comfort and safety before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Maintains sterile technique rigorously within the operating room to prevent infection and contamination.
  • Performs basic life support (BLS) measures in emergency situations, responding quickly and effectively.
  • Applies infection control protocols, adhering to strict guidelines for cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Monitors and records vital signs, promptly reporting any changes or concerns to the nursing staff.
  • Assists surgical teams by preparing equipment, positioning patients, and handing instruments as directed.
  • Conducts patient transport safely and efficiently, moving patients to and from the operating room.
  • Utilizes medical terminology accurately when communicating with healthcare professionals and documenting care.
  • Completes thorough documentation of patient observations, interventions, and other relevant information.
  • Engages in clear communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team, fostering a supportive environment.
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Holds a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completes a Patient Care Technician program or equivalent medical training.
Experience
  • Possesses experience in a healthcare setting, preferably within an acute care or operating room environment.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Demonstrates proficiency in sterile technique and aseptic practices.
  • Exhibits strong patient care skills, including empathy and compassion.
  • Maintains current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Applies thorough knowledge of infection control principles.
  • Accurately measures and interprets vital signs.
  • Provides effective assistance to surgical teams.
  • Executes safe patient transport techniques.
  • Understands and uses medical terminology correctly.
  • Performs accurate and timely documentation.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Holds a Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT/A) credential.
  • Possesses experience with specific operating room equipment or procedures.
Physical Requirements/Work Conditions
  • Stands and walks for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Lifts, pushes, and pulls patients and heavy equipment regularly.
  • Works in a fast-paced and occasionally high-stress environment.
  • Manages exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and infectious diseases.
  • Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by hospital policy.
