JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Clinical Veterinarian to join our team. As a Clinical Veterinarian at Transpharmation, you will be responsible for the health of animals at the facility by diagnosing and treating medical conditions, diseases, and injuries, as well as being a member of the Animal Care Committee. The Clinical Veterinarian may also perform high level study procedures as needed and develop new techniques.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE

• Review of all existing and continued development of new animal health and welfare programs to ensure that all of our health and welfare programs are continually updated and reflect the most up to date veterinary medical, surgical and laboratory animal best practices
• Responsible for maintenance and development of any facility animal veterinary related procedures and SOP's
• Oversight of the rodent clinical health monitoring and health quality assurance program (ongoing monitoring of microbiological status of colony and housing environment)
• Dog and cat colony ongoing clinical health monitoring and health care programs (routine health such as vaccine and anthelmintic program, but also environmental programs for the prevention of disease)
• Oversight of all facility specific SOP's and guidelines for animal care and use (authorship and/or review)
• Participates in emergency care after-hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis
• Other duties as assigned

REGULATORY
COMPLIANCE

• Ensure that animal facility operations, infrastructure, environmental parameters and animal care program remains compliant with the regulations and guidelines of the CCAC and OMAFA Animals for Research Act
• Assist in all regulatory assessments and in preparation of animal health and welfare related documentation for assessment purposes
• May provide veterinary oversight to act as Qualified Person in Charge (QPIC) or the Alternate Qualified Person in Charge (AQPIC) for controlled drugs.

RESEARCH AND TEACHING

• Participation in studies whenever required (normally this would occur when veterinary specific input is required, from physical exams to surgical interventions etc.)
• Continued investigation of methodologies that aim to make welfare refinements to our current protocols (ex. indwelling catheter implantations to facilitate serial collections)
• Lunch and learn and/or specific training and teaching sessions for staff
• Continued development and refinement of the existing staff training programs

INVESTIGATOR SUPPORT

• Assist in animal protocol development (authorship, proofreading etc.)
• Technical support (animal/procedural/veterinary medical)

ACC

• Involvement as the ACC veterinarian as well as part of the ACC Council
• Provide support to the ACC by ensuring that the ACC operates and implements all procedural requirements of the regulatory bodies (PAM administration, site visits, protocol review methodologies etc.)

INTERACTION

This position will liaise with all other departments on an as needed basis.

COMMUNICATION

Communications are with all departments within Transpharmation as well as external contacts/clients. Collaboration, execution, and reporting of the quality assurance program. Verbal communication is required to request and receive instructions for work, to report on activities, results, problems, and to participate in planning and scheduling of work and equipment use. Written communication is required for accurate and detailed recording of procedures, for reporting results and for completing documentation. Reading and comprehension of written protocols and manuals is essential.

SUPERVISOR OF VETERINARY DEPARTMENT STAFF

• Supervises veterinary department technical staff working on clinical and surgical projects
• Actively participates in veterinary staff recruiting, orienting, training and reviews
• Provides expense & capital asset recommendations to senior management
• Acts as representative to senior management for the interests of the veterinary department

WORKING CONDITIONS

ENVIRONMENT

There will be occasional periods of several hours per day exposed to noxious odours from diagnostic materials and/or samples. There will also be the occasional need to work with chemicals in a controlled environment.

RISK TO HEALTH

When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, there are risks being bitten, kicked, and scratched. In addition, veterinarians working with diseased animals risk being infected by the disease. There will be the occasional exposure to small quantities of toxic irritant or corrosive chemicals as well as exposure to freezers (-80C) while storing and retrieving materials. There will be the occasional exposure to small quantities of radiation while performing radiographs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands associated with this position include: standing, sitting, bending, twisting, lifting, carrying liquid containers, carrying boxes weighing up to 20 kg and daily periods of keyboarding.

PHYSICAL DEXTERITY

Agility, accuracy and consistency will be required while handling precision instruments such as, pipettes, balances, pH meters, and surgical instruments. Strong fine motor skills in fingers, hands, and arms.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of 3 years of experience
• Strong communication skills are essential to discuss recommendations and explain treatment options

KNOWLEDGE

• Knowledge of the basic principles of biology, immunology and chemistry
• Knowledge of the principles of safe handling of potentially pathogenic substances and contaminated materials
• Familiar with the following acts and regulations: ISO 17025 (2017), OECD Principles on GLP, CCAC guidelines and policies and the Animals for Research Act
• Knowledge of CCAC and OMAFA regulations and guidelines
