The Trailer Shop Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Trailer Maintenance Shop, ensuring that all company-owned trailers and RT equipment remain safe, reliable, and in optimal working condition. This position is responsible for leading a team of Trailer Mechanics, coordinating preventative maintenance and repairs, overseeing structural and welding repairs, maintaining regulatory compliance, minimizing equipment downtime, and promoting a culture of safety, quality, and accountability. The ideal candidate has strong leadership skills, hands-on experience with trailer maintenance and repair, and the ability to effectively manage shop operations in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead, coach, train, and supervise Trailer Mechanics while promoting a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Plan, prioritize, assign, and monitor daily trailer maintenance and repair activities to maximize fleet availability and minimize downtime.
- Oversee preventive maintenance inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on company-owned trailers.
- Supervise structural trailer repairs, including welding, fabrication, suspension, brake, air system, electrical, and lighting repairs.
- Ensure repairs are completed accurately, efficiently, and according to manufacturer specifications and company standards.
- Review completed Work Orders for accuracy, labor hours, parts usage, and proper documentation within Fleetio.
- Monitor shop productivity, quality of work, and technician performance while identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure all trailers comply with DOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, company safety policies, and preventative maintenance standards.
- Coordinate trailer inspections and ensure defects are corrected before equipment is returned to service.
- Maintain effective communication with Fleet Management, Dispatch, Operations, vendors, and other departments regarding equipment status and repair timelines.
- Assist with troubleshooting complex mechanical and structural trailer issues when needed.
- Manage shop inventory by maintaining adequate parts, materials, and welding supplies while controlling costs.
- Ensure shop equipment, tools, and work areas remain organized, clean, and safe.
- Conduct daily shop meetings, shift handoffs, and safety discussions to communicate priorities and operational updates.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and ensure all repair documentation is completed in a timely manner.
- Support emergency breakdown repairs and assist with after-hours situations when necessary.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or trade school training preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of trailer maintenance experience with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.
- Experience repairing and maintaining pneumatic bulk trailers, including Timpte and Maxxim trailers, strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of trailer air brake systems, suspension, electrical systems, lighting, landing gear, wheel-end components, and preventative maintenance.
- Experience supervising trailer structural repairs, fabrication, and welding operations.
- Proficiency using fleet maintenance software; Fleetio experience preferred.
- Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple repairs while maintaining high quality standards.
- Working knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and applicable safety regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, technical schematics, and service documentation.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and emergency call-outs when necessary.
- Able to provide own basic mechanic tools.
- Be able to read, write, and speak English.
Physical Requirements:
- Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up 50 lbs and occasionally more with assistance of medical devices.
- Able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb for extended periods during the workday.
- Able to work underneath, around, and inside heavy equipment in small spaces.
- Able to use hands and fingers for gripping, handling tools, operating diagnostic equipment, and performing precise mechanical repairs.
- Able to frequently reach above shoulder level and below the waist
- Able to safely operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, jacks, hoists, and other shop equipment.
- Able to climb ladders and mount/dismount heavy equipment safety.
- Able to work in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, dust, grease, noise, vibration, and exposure to chemicals or fumes.
- Able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, and respirators when required.
- Able to visually inspect equipment, read gauges and technical manuals, and distinguish colors related to wiring and diagnostics.
