Job description

Special Education Paraeducator position at the Torrington Transition Academy (18-22 Program)

Job Summary and Functions:

Under the direction of a certified teacher, works individually or in small groups with adult students (age 18-22) with disabilities  in the classroom or within the community work setting. Supports students with academic / daily living skills and work tasks.  Assists with  the maintenance of materials, equipment, and records of students and any additional tasks as deemed necessary by the special education teacher or supervisor in order to meet the IEP'd needs of each child .

Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree and/or 60 college credits or successful passing of the Para-Pro Exam.
  • Previous experience working in a school setting or with groups of children preferred.
  • Warm and supportive personality with the ability to relate to children with a variety of special needs and disabilities
  • Ability to maintain the rules of confidentiality and the rights of all children.

Terms of Employment: 10-month schedule, 184 work days, 35 hours per week. Starting pay in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement is $19.15 per hour, with comprehensive medical benefit package and tuition reimbursement.  

Internal Applicants: Regular employees of the Torrington Public Schools who are current members of the Paraeducators' union. In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, "Paraeducators shall not be eligible to apply for lateral positions that become vacant after August 15th. Notwithstanding the preceding sentence, paraprofessionals shall be eligible to apply for promotional opportunities at any time."
