Full-time (10-month contract)

CP Atlantic bureau 

Description of Role

Are you a creative self-starter full of ideas? Able to juggle breaking news with longer pieces that delve into meaning and implication?

The successful applicant will work primarily covering breaking news and features in the Halifax bureau of The Canadian Press.

We are looking for an excellent writer who can break news, help set the agenda, define trends, and see the big picture.

The ideal candidate also has impeccable journalistic judgment and the ability to report with speed and accuracy. Experience in producing audio and video clips will be considered an asset.

This position requires presence in the office and the ability to travel to pursue assignments in the Atlantic Canada region.

Responsibilities:

  • Write, edit and gather multimedia content for CP's various services (print, digital, broadcast and video) from CP's Halifax office.
  • Report breaking news with speed and rock-solid accuracy
  • Monitor news outlets, social media and other sources to stay on top of news across Atlantic Canada
  • Aggressively uncover news from a variety of sources

Skills and Experience Required:

  • At least three years experience in a newsroom
  • Experience using different platforms, relying heavily on video, multimedia and broadcast
  • Strong news judgment and commitment to accuracy and fairness
  • Must be a self-starter who can work both independently and within a team
  • Ability to identify solid news story ideas of interest to a national audience
  • Ability to both report and edit independently
  • Ability to work under tight deadline pressures
  • Exceptional ability to track down information by phone or online
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A track record of featuring a diversity of voices in reporting
  • Proven ability to use social media as an effective newsgathering tool
  • Ability to speak French would be an asset
  • Weekend shift work and occasional travel required

This position reports to the Quebec-Atlantic bureau chief at The Canadian Press.

Hiring Range: The base salary for this role ranges from $55,377.92 to $89,254.36 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate's level of experience, technical skills and alignment with the role requirements.

Vous etes une personne creative, pleine d'idees et capable de jongler avec les nouvelles de derniere heure et les reportages de fond analysant le sens et les implications des evenements?

La personne retenue travaillera principalement a la couverture des nouvelles de derniere heure et a la redaction de documentaires au bureau de Halifax de La Presse Canadienne.

 Nous recherchons quelqu'un qui possede d'excellentes aptitudes de redaction et qui peut traiter l'actualite, contribuer a definir les priorites, identifier les tendances et avoir une vision globale.

Le ou la candidate ideale sera aussi dote(e) d'un jugement journalistique impeccable et de l'habilete de rapporter l'information avec rapidite et exactitude. L'experience en production de clips audio et video sera consideree comme un atout.

Ce poste necessite une presence au bureau et la capacite de se deplacer pour remplir des affectations dans la region de l'Atlantique canadien.

Responsabilites:

  • Travailler a partir de la salle de redaction de la PC a Halifax et rediger, reviser et rassembler du contenu multimedia pour les differents services de la PC (ecrit, numerique, radio et video)
  • Publier des nouvelles de derniere heure avec rapidite et une exactitude a toute epreuve
  • Surveiller les medias d'information, les reseaux sociaux et d'autres sources pour rester au courant de l'actualite partout en Atlantique
  • Denicher de maniere proactive les nouvelles provenant de diverses sources

Competences et experience necessaires :

  • Au moins trois ans d'experience dans une salle de redaction
  • Experience dans l'utilisation de differentes plateformes, en s'appuyant fortement sur la video, le multimedia et la radio
  • Solide jugement journalistique et engagement envers l'exactitude et l'equite
  • Doit faire preuve de debrouillardise et etre capable de travailler aussi bien de maniere independante qu'au sein d'une equipe
  • Habilete a identifier d'excellentes idees de reportage interessant un public national
  • Habilete a publier et reviser de facon independante
  • Habilete a travailler sous la pression de delais serres
  • Habilete exceptionnelle d'obtenir l'information au telephone
  • Excellentes aptitudes de communication ecrite et verbale  
  • Une experience eprouvee dans la diversite des voix citees dans les reportages
  • Capacite averee a utiliser les reseaux sociaux comme outil efficace de collecte d'informations
  • L'habilete a parler francais est un atout
  • Quelques quarts de travail et des deplacements occasionnels sont prevus
