Field Technician

Description:

The Field Technician performs all aspects of work on rail cars processed through the Facility and Commissioning Warranty Sites. This includes electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, modifications, and any additional tasks assigned by a supervisor.

This role involves working on rail cars in the final assembly process. Technicians will use standard hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, sockets, etc.) and perform basic troubleshooting using multimeters and PC-based test equipment. Responsibilities include reading piping diagrams, mechanical drawings, technical manuals, and electrical schematics as required.

Technicians will perform testing procedures on systems such as HVAC, brakes, propulsion, communication systems, toilet systems, trainline systems, signage systems, automatic train control, general functional testing, hipot testing, wiring continuity testing, pneumatic leakage testing, dynamic tests, burn-in tests, and more. From time to time, the Field Technician will also assist engineering teams with various test activities.

Regular customer interaction is required. Field Technicians must be able to communicate clearly, confidently explain their work, and complete all required test documentation, reports, and job-related forms.

Field Technicians often operate without direct supervision and are expected to take the lead on assignments. This is not an entry-level role. The Field Technician must guide Function Test Technicians or Rail Car Technicians as needed, initiate support requests from vendors, engineering, or manufacturing, and update the supervisor as required.

The Field Technician will also enter discrepancies into the database system and accurately report time worked.

Job Specifications — Minimum Requirements:

- Previous work experience in electrical or mechanical testing

- High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or an associate degree in an engineering field preferred

- Ability to read, write, and speak English

- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, blueprints, and mechanical drawings

- Proficiency with basic hand tools and power tools

- Ability to use multimeters, chart recorders, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, etc.

- Basic proficiency with portable test equipment (PTE), including downloading and analyzing data

- Proficiency with the English measurement system and willingness to learn the Metric system within a defined timeframe

- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

- Ability to work flexible hours and any shift

- Ability to climb stairs and ladders and lift/push/pull up to 40 lbs.

- Comfortable working in a rail yard environment

- Willingness to travel for business or field assignments (extensive travel may be required)

- Proficiency with MS Office and other industry-related software

- Ability to lead tasks and assist other technicians

- Ability to work independently

- Ability to produce cohesive, accurate, and relevant reports

- Ability to troubleshoot using downloads, schematics, and manuals

- Ability to analyze problems or data and produce comprehensive reports detailing findings

- Strong communication skills when interacting with customers and personnel
