Job description

Summary of the Role

The Legal Media Relations Manager is responsible for leading earned media strategy and execution for Thomson Reuters legal businesses. This role drives proactive, highimpact media engagement that strengthens Thomson Reuters position as the trusted leader in professionalgrade legal AI, research, and technology.

This role is focused on earned credibility, not volume. Success is defined by quality of coverage, narrative alignment, and influence with legal, technology, and business decisionmakers-not press hit counts alone.

The role partners closely with Product and Technology Communications & Corporate Communications team, Legal Marketing, Product, Analyst Relations, and the Influencer Relations Manager to ensure consistent, disciplined storytelling across the legal ecosystem.

About the Role

Media Strategy & Narrative Development

  • Anticipate emerging legal AI trends and proactively position Thomson Reuters in relevant conversations.
  • Develop and execute the business of legal narrative and associated media relations strategy aligned to Thomson Reuters legal and AI priorities.
  • Own Thomson Reuters leadership on critical legalAI issues beyond product news, including AI hallucinations and reliability, citation integrity and verification, data governance and model boundaries, the use of AI by courts and judges, regulatory responses to AI in legal services, and the impact of AI on access to justice and legal education.
  • Consistently frame market differentiation by helping journalists understand key distinctions-tools vs. systems, pilots vs. production, and convenience vs. accountability-through briefings, background context, and comparative framing, reinforcing where Thomson Reuters leads (depth, scale, governance, trust) without directly naming competitors.
  • Position senior leaders as market thinkers (rather than product spokespeople) by shaping profiles around how the legal profession is evolving, what lawyers should expect next, and what good AI governance looks like, securing trendbased, reflective, and forwardlooking media opportunities where executives are quoted for judgment and insight-not just announcements.
  • Identify, prepare, and deploy credible customers as spokespeople in media and industry forums, elevating realworld experience and outcomes to validate Thomson Reuters leadership and reinforce trust through authentic, practitionerled storytelling.
  • Use products as proof points ( please note media relations related to product launches are handled in the P&T comms group)

Proactive Media Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key legal, legaltech, business, and select mainstream media.
  • Proactively pitch stories, commentary, and thought leadership tied to product launches, industry moments, and market shifts.
  • Manage reactive media inquiries with speed, accuracy, and sound judgment.

Executive & Spokesperson Support

  • Prepare and support senior executives and subjectmatter experts for media interviews, briefings, and speaking opportunities.
  • Develop media materials including briefing documents, Q&A, key messages, and backgrounders.
  • Ensure executives are deployed strategically and consistently across priority outlets.

CrossFunctional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product, Legal Marketing, and Technology teams to ensure media engagement reflects real product capabilities and roadmap priorities.
  • Partner with Product and Technology Communications & Corporate Communications team.
  • Partner with the Influencer Relations Manager to align earned media with thirdparty voices and influence programs.
  • Coordinate with Analyst Relations to ensure narrative consistency across analysts, media, and influencers.

Risk, Governance & Measurement

  • Ensure all media engagement adheres to Thomson Reuters standards for accuracy, transparency, and responsible communication.
  • Identify and manage reputational risk in coordination with Product and Technology Communications & Corporate Communications team and Legal teams.
  • Track and report on media impact using qualitative and narrativebased metrics, not vanity measures.

About You

Required

  • 7+ years of experience in media relations, corporate communications, or public relations, ideally within legal, professional services, technology, or regulated industries.
  • Experience working closely with C-Suite leaders
  • Strong understanding of the legal industry and its media landscape.
  • Proven experience managing complex media narratives involving technology, AI, or highstakes professional workflows.
  • Excellent writing, messaging, and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound judgment and ability to operate confidently in fastmoving, highvisibility situations.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting product launches or major announcements in legal or enterprise technology.
  • Undergraduate / pre-law degree
  • Familiarity with analyst relations, thought leadership programs, or executive communications.
  • Comfort working with senior executives and technical subjectmatter experts.

Key Attributes for Success

  • Strategic, not transactional, approach to media
  • Calm, credible, and decisive under pressure
  • Strong editorial instinct and news judgment
  • Collaborative mindset across Comms, Marketing, and Product
  • High standards for accuracy and professionalism

Why This Role Matters

As legal AI moves from experimentation to production, the market increasingly looks to trusted media to understand what is real, reliable, and defensible. This role ensures Thomson Reuters leads those conversations with clarity, authority, and credibility-reinforcing trust in the company, its platforms, and its people.
