Job description

Associate Academic Adviser (Sales and Family Enrollment)
Build a Sales Career Helping Families Succeed
We are looking for a driven, people-oriented Associate Academic Adviser to join our team and grow a portfolio of families across our Southern California learning centers.
This is a sales, relationship management, and client advising role. If you are motivated by measurable goals, enjoy building genuine relationships, and want a career path with real earning and advancement potential, we want to hear from you.
You do not need a background in education or teaching. We will train you on everything—Sylvan programs, student assessments, the enrollment process, and how to run an effective conference. What we cannot train is the motivation to follow up, the confidence to have a pricing conversation, and the discipline to manage a pipeline. That needs to come from you.
Our company operates ten Sylvan Learning Centers throughout the Los Angeles area. Academic Advisers work with families across multiple locations rather than managing the daily operations of one particular center. Meetings may be conducted by Zoom, telephone, or in person.
What You Will Do
As an Associate Academic Adviser, you will:
  • Respond promptly and professionally to prospective families.
  • Conduct enrollment consultations and results conferences with parents and guardians.
  • Explain student assessment results and recommend appropriate Sylvan programs.
  • Follow up consistently with families who inquire, visit a center, or complete an assessment but do not enroll immediately.
  • Build and manage a growing portfolio—your own book of business—of current and prospective families.
  • Conduct ongoing progress, renewal, and educational-planning conferences with enrolled families.
  • Identify opportunities for continued enrollment, additional services, sibling enrollment, test preparation, and referrals.
  • Reconnect with former Sylvan families whose children may have new academic needs.
  • Maintain accurate notes, follow-up dates, and pipeline information in Company systems.
  • Collaborate with educational and center operations teams to ensure families get the right program and a great experience.
  • Meet individual and team goals related to enrollment, revenue, retention, and portfolio growth.
As you develop in the role, you will build toward managing approximately 150–200 family relationships across several centers.
What This Role Is—and Is Not
This is primarily a sales, family-advising, and portfolio-development role.

It is not primarily responsible for:
  • Managing tutors or staff schedules.
  • Running the daily operations of a learning center.
  • Managing a center profit-and-loss statement.
  • Overseeing facilities, supplies, or routine administrative functions
Your focus is on developing relationships, running effective conferences, following up consistently, and helping families select and continue educational services.
Who We Are Looking For
This role is a strong fit for early-career professionals who are ready to build toward a sales and client management career. Prior experience in education is not required or expected.
Our ideal candidate has:
  • A four-year college degree.
  • Experience in customer service, sales, admissions, hospitality, retail, recruiting, or another client-facing role—even if early in career.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills.
  • A genuine interest in helping children and families succeed.
  • The confidence to discuss program recommendations, pricing, and enrollment decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills and disciplined follow-through.
  • Comfort conducting meetings by Zoom and in person.
  • A business-minded approach and motivation to hit goals, grow a portfolio, and earn more over time.
  • A desire to grow into an Academic Adviser or senior business-development role.
Experience in tutoring, education, or counseling is a plus, but not a requirement. We provide full training on Sylvan programs, student assessments, advising methods, our systems, and the enrollment process. Candidates who come in ready to learn and work typically outperform those who come in with fixed habits.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Starting pay of $26–$27 per hour depending on qualifications and experience, with expected annual base compensation in the mid-$50,000 range.
  • Quarterly incentive pay based on enrollment, revenue, and retention performance. High performers have meaningfully increased their total compensation through incentives.
  • Two weeks of paid vacation.
  • Paid Holidays
  • Medical/Dental/Vision Benefits
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) participation, subject to eligibility—you build an ownership stake over time.
  • Mileage Reimbursement for business travel between Company locations
Structured training, regular coaching, and a clear path to grow into a senior Academic Adviser role with greater portfolio responsibility and higher earning potential.
Schedule and Location
This is a full-time position. Because most family conferences happen when parents are available—typically weekday evenings (4–7:30 pm) and Saturday mornings (our centers close by 2 pm on Saturdays)—evening and weekend availability is a regular part of this role, not an occasional exception.
Day-to-day work includes:
  • Zoom-based family conferences.
  • Telephone and digital follow-up.
  • In-person work at Company learning centers.
  • Periodic travel among our Los Angeles-area locations (valid driver's license and reliable transportation required)
About Us
We operate ten Sylvan Learning Centers that have served Southern California families for more than 20 years. We help students strengthen academic skills, build confidence, prepare for important educational milestones, and achieve meaningful long-term progress.
We are a 100% employee-owned company. That means the people who work here have a real stake in how the business performs. We are expanding our family-advising model to provide more responsive follow-up, stronger long-term relationships, and a more convenient experience for families across all our locations.
We are an equal opportunity employer and consider all qualified applicants without regard to legally protected characteristics.
