Job description

Position Summary
The purpose of the position is to perform work on conventional/typical preservation projects for a variety of historic structures. This entails the full gamut of types, and includes custodial duties, water quality testing and monitoring, some new construction, major restoration, or rehabilitation, complete stabilization, asset alteration, and more. Preservationist Technician will work under the supervision of NPS Facility Management Staff and the Facilities Manager that will instruct, assign, and review work to be completed. Historic Preservation is central to the mission of the National Park Service and the policies as directed by the National Historic Preservation Act. These positions will support the continuing work of preservation for the many historic resources throughout the park service while providing for mentoring and training of new individuals to learn the specialized skills to become a Preservationist.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Custodial/ Routine Maintenance- Assist NPS staff in daily and weekly custodial duties including the cleaning of public use and administrative spaces. Identify, report, and work with NPS staff to address facility issues related to Carpentry, Painting, Plumbing, Vehicle Maintenance, as well as minor Electrical and HVAC repairs.
  • Carpentry/Woodworking-Reconstructs, restores, or rehabilitates wood structures by performing work on such elements as structural framing rafters, doors, windows, floors, staircases, trusses and beams, interior and exterior trim, and roofing where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential and structural soundness is important.
  • Masonry-Position repairs, reconstructs, restores, or rehabilitates masonry structures by performing work such as stabilizing or constructing foundations, repainting walls, chimneys, fireplaces, and other building elements and stabilizing or restoring engineered structures such as bridges, stone retaining walls, using a combination of modern and historic techniques.
  • Water Quality Monitoring and Testing- The position will assist licensed water and water operators with the daily and monthly water quality tests, facility inspections, and when needed minor system repairs. Interested candidates will be given the opportunity to pursue WY state Water/Waste Water certifications.

Marginal Duties
Inspection and assessment of historic structures; Assists NPS Staff in developing recommended treatment plans to address deferred maintenance issues of historic structures

Valid Drivers License
The ability to work independently
Preferred Qualifications
Some experience with masonry, carpentry and woodworking
Hours
40 per week
Living Accommodations
This position will be housed in Park Housing. The selected individual will occupy a single furnished studio apartment.
Compensation
$1,100 - one time RT travel allowance
$500- weekly living allowance (paid bi-weekly)
$25 weekly commuting allowance (Devils Tower is ~10 miles to the town of Hulett (pop. 400) which has a grocery store, laundry, hardware, and restaurants.
Housing on site provided.
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
