Job description

Medical Laboratory Technician

Akicita Federal is hiring Medical Laboratory Technicians to deliver essential clinical laboratory services for the Phoenix Area Indian Health Service (IHS) in Phoenix, AZ. In this role, you will perform diagnostic testing and support laboratory operations that directly impact the health outcomes of Native American communities across the Phoenix Area. This is meaningful, hands-on clinical work in a federally supported healthcare environment operating around the clock.

- Perform clinical laboratory testing across multiple disciplines, including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, and immunology, in accordance with federal and state requirements and accreditation standards.

- Process, analyze, and report patient specimens accurately and within established turnaround time standards to support timely clinical decision-making.

- Operate, calibrate, and perform quality control checks on laboratory instrumentation and equipment in accordance with accepted laboratory practice.

- Document test results, instrument maintenance, and quality control data completely and accurately in the laboratory information system.

- Recognize and escalate critical values, specimen integrity issues, or equipment malfunctions to appropriate clinical or supervisory personnel without delay.

- Maintain a safe laboratory environment by following infection control, biohazard, and chemical safety protocols at all times.

- Provide coverage across day, evening, and night shifts — including weekends and federal holidays — as scheduled to ensure continuous laboratory operations.

$132,000 - $135,000 a year - Associate's degree (or higher) in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a closely related field. - Active certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from a nationally recognized credentialing body (e.g., ASCP, AMT, or equivalent). - Demonstrated competency performing clinical laboratory testing in a hospital, clinic, or comparable healthcare setting. - Ability to work variable shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and federal holidays, as operationally required. - Ability to successfully complete all required qualification verification, security screening, onboarding, orientation, and mandatory training prior to independent performance. - Compliance with all applicable federal, state, and accreditation standards governing clinical laboratory practice.

What sets candidates apart:

- Prior experience supporting laboratory services within an Indian Health Service, tribal health, or federally operated healthcare facility.

- Familiarity with Joint Commission, CAP, or CLIA accreditation standards and quality assurance processes.

- Experience working in a high-volume or 24/7 laboratory environment requiring independent judgment and rapid turnaround.

- Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and automated analyzer platforms commonly used in hospital-based labs.

- Background working with underserved or Indigenous patient populations and a commitment to culturally responsive care.
