Position Summary:

The General Manager is a senior operational leader responsible for overseeing the daily operations, strategic growth, and team leadership within a solid waste and recycling company. A key focus of the role is driving municipal and regional growth by developing strong relationships with local governments, expanding service contracts, ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards towards driving and ensuring operational excellence. This position requires a dynamic leader who can successfully balance all of the above while identifying opportunities to grow operational and safely.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

As the site leader, the GM is responsible for the safety, operational, excellence and business results of the MRF. To achieve this, the GM has key areas of responsibilities:

  • Establishes and manages long term goals that align with Company standards,
  • Understands and drives the financial performance of the business: Manage P&L for internal and external sales, procurement, operations, transportation, safety, etc.,
  • Review and understand annual budget, forecast and financial summaries for site,
  • Manages 3 direct reports and approximately 100 indirect reports
  • Creates effective operational teams, driving a safety culture across the facility with an emphasis on hazard identification and prevention,
  • Manages all relationships with vendors to ensure overall contract compliance and client satisfaction
  • Manages all transportation and logistics functions for collection route operations
  • Ensuring a systemic approach to maintenance, delivering a preventative maintenance plan and investment in appropriate capital projects.
  • Integrity: Lead with integrity to ensure commitment to appropriate standards, policies and regulations,
  • Engagement: Set meetings with site leaders/employees to ensure alignment, communication, engagement, and drive cultural change across the facility

Job Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors' Degree preferred in business, environmental science or related field.

Experience and Competencies:

Demonstrated success in managing (post) collection operations:

  • Experience in managing over $15M annual P&L
  • Must have had previous experience managing residential and commercial collection contracts
  • Demonstrated success in managing collection operations
  • Demonstrated success in hiring, training and motivating an operations team to drive contract success and compliance
  • Experience managing a fleet of solid waste or recycling collection vehicles (commercial frontload, roll-off, tractor trailer, flatbed, etc.)
  • At least 5+ years of supervisory/managerial experience in recycling or waste management.
  • Skills: Demonstrated business acumen, strategic thinking, leadership, analytical/financial skills, problem-solving and adaptability.
