About Us:

At Spek Diagnostics, our histology team specializes in processing a diverse range of specimens, with a primary focus on dermatopathology, oral pathology, podiatric pathology, ENT, and general surgical samples. We are always expanding our testing repertoire and further enhancing our diagnostic capabilities. Our lab is equipped with automated platforms and utilizes advanced software to optimize the flow of samples, testing processes, and quality control, ensuring efficiency and accuracy at every step.

Overview:

As a part-time histotechnician, you will perform assigned duties within all areas of the histology department, train less experienced histology personnel, work to optimize the flow of activities in the lab, assist with inspections, and assist with maintaining the laboratory facilities and equipment.

Hours and Location:

Core hours are Monday through Friday 9AM to 3PM in office, with occasional schedule adjustments for coverage--shifts may extend as late as 7PM if needed. Employees are guaranteed at least 30 hours of work per week.

Key Responsibilities and Required Skills:

• Accurately accession incoming specimen
• Perform hand stains (e.g. special stains, IHC, direct immunofluorescence when applicable) with precision, following established protocols. 
• Perform specimen grossing coverage as needed.
• Prepare tissue samples for histological examination by embedding and sectioning 
• Collaborate with our pathologist and laboratory staff to ensure timely processing of specimens.
  
• Management of digital slide scanning protocols.
• Assist with CLIA inspections.
• Participate in protocol validations when required.
  
• Perform quality control and maintenance of instruments and protocols per written procedures. 
• Document and maintain records according to laboratory policies in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  
• Communicate and facilitate equipment repair and maintenance.
• Maintain clean and orderly laboratory environment.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or associate degree with at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at minimum include 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination, unless the employee meets the exception for CLIA requirements.
• Three years of related experience preferred.

OR

• ASCP certification (HT or HTL).
• One year of related experience preferred
  

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time while performing laboratory duties. 
  
• Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination sufficient for precise tasks such as grossing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. 
• Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs (specimen containers, reagent bottles, supply boxes). 
• Visual acuity sufficient to distinguish colors, read labels, and use a microscope for extended periods. 
• Ability to work with and around laboratory chemicals, reagents, and biohazardous materials, following proper safety protocols and PPE guidelines.
• Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements
• Ability to work in a lab environment with exposure to fumes, odors, and varying temperatures (e.g., processing/staining stations, walk-in coolers)
