    Job Description

    Purpose: The Patient Care Technician assists nurses in providing basic care and performing specific procedures with patients. The Patient Care Technician works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

    Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Demonstrates ICARE values, cooperation and positive interpersonal relations when interacting with all persons within the hospital environment and community
    • Provides basic and technical care to patients as directed by the RN
    • Performs specific patient procedures and treatments according to Hospital guidelines and policies
    • Documents care given and patient response in patient record
    • Cleans and maintains equipment and environment
    • Demonstrates knowledge and use of appropriate equipment and supplies to provide quality patient care and safe environment.
    • Communicates significant information and changes in patient condition to the RN
    • Actively participates as a team member. Constructively addresses patient and team issues to insure quality patient care and a collaborative work environment
    • Assumes the mentor role for new PCT's
    • Assumes responsibility for ongoing education and completion of mandatory requirements
    Job Requirements

    General Requirements: Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association within 60 days of hire. Successful completion of Acute Care Nursing Assistant Program or documented completion of Fundamentals of Nursing as a current student in a nursing program or previous experience as a PCT in an acute care setting.

    Work Experience: None

    Education: High school diploma, G.E.D. or successful completion of 12 grades combined with continued enrollment in early college program. Successful completion of Acute Care Nursing Assistant Program OR certified nurse assistant program OR documented completion of Fundamentals of Nursing as a current student in a nursing program OR completion of a medical assistant program OR completion of an EMT or Paramedic program.

    Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Must demonstrate the ability to sustain extensive standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting. There is a high potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases. Potential for latex and chemical exposure. Must demonstrate a commitment to Sparrow ICARE values. Must adhere to Sparrow's Customer Service Behavioral Privacy and Security Procedure. Maintains and protects patient's rights under the HIPAA Privacy Standards.
