Position Summary

Solutions HCU, a well-funded healthcare start-up building medical products manufacturing plants in the United States, is seeking a Controller to lead its accounting function. The Controller owns the close, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, cash management, internal controls, audit, tax, and accounting systems. The role is hands-on, reports to the President, and offers the opportunity to grow into the Chief Financial Officer position as the Company scales.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Operations and Close

•     Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, including journal entries, accruals, and reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts.

•     Manage accounts payable, disbursements, payroll accounting, fixed assets, and expense reporting.

•     Account for construction in progress and capital equipment, including milestone payments, multi-currency purchases, capitalization, capitalized interest, and depreciation by asset class.

•     Establish inventory and cost accounting ahead of commercial production, including standard costs, bills of material, variances, and cost of goods sold.

•     Maintain the chart of accounts and dimension structure to support reporting by plant, department, project, and product.

Financial Reporting

•     Prepare monthly financial statements under U.S. GAAP and the management reporting package for the President and the Board of Directors.

•     Report budget versus actual monthly with written variance explanations.

•     Research and document technical accounting positions, including debt, leases, capitalized interest, inventory, and revenue recognition.

•     Prepare financial materials for senior leadership and external parties to a consistent, professional standard.

Budgeting, Forecasting, and Cash Management

•     Lead the annual budget and rolling forecast with department leaders, and present them to the President and the Board.

•     Maintain the multi-year financial model covering construction, startup, operating expenses, headcount, and revenue ramp, reconciled to the cash forecast and capital expenditure tracking.

•     Own the 13-week and long-range cash forecast, daily cash position, banking relationships, and payment controls, including dual approval and positive pay.

•     Administer the Company's financing, including draw requests, interest and fee calculations, covenant compliance, and reporting to capital providers.

Controls, Audit, and Compliance

•     Design and document internal controls, accounting policies, and segregation of duties, scalable to a multi-plant manufacturer.

•     Lead the annual financial statement audit, including selection of the audit firm, preparation of schedules, coordination of fieldwork, and resolution of findings.

•     Manage tax compliance with outside advisors, including income, sales and use, property, and payroll taxes across multiple states.

•     Maintain insurance programs and the corporate compliance calendar.

Systems and Team

•     Lead selection and implementation of the Company's ERP and accounting systems, including general ledger, fixed assets, procurement, inventory, and manufacturing modules.

•     Automate close, reconciliation, and reporting processes, applying AI tools where they improve speed, accuracy, and insight.

•     Hire, develop, and lead the accounting team as the plant comes online.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

•     Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and an active CPA license required; MBA or Master's in Accounting a plus.

•     Eight or more years of progressive accounting experience with ownership of the close and financial statements, as a Controller or in a senior role ready for that step.

•     Manufacturing experience required, including inventory, cost accounting, fixed assets, and capital projects. Pharmaceutical or medical products experience a plus.

•     Experience at a private equity backed company, or another company with institutional ownership and strict controls, preferred.

•     Experience with external financial statement audits required; public accounting foundation preferred.

•     Demonstrated ownership of budgeting, forecasting, and cash forecasting at the company or division level.

•     ERP selection or implementation experience strongly valued.

•     Experience with debt compliance and reporting to lenders or investors a plus.

•     Experience applying AI tools in accounting and analytical work preferred; willingness to adopt new tools required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

•     Strong command of U.S. GAAP, including fixed assets, capitalized interest, leases, debt, inventory, and cost accounting.

•     Budgeting, forecasting, and cash management skills, including building a driver-based forecast and managing liquidity through a capital-intensive startup phase.

•     Ability to present the balance sheet, cash position, and financial plan clearly to the President and the Board.

•     Hands-on ERP proficiency and advanced Excel; comfortable working directly in the general ledger.

•     Working fluency with AI tools for analysis, documentation, and process automation, and curiosity to keep learning as the tools change.

•     Self-starter with a strong work ethic, sound judgment, and exceptional attention to detail.

•     Collaborative team member who works effectively with engineering, operations, quality, and human resources, and communicates clearly with executives and external parties.

Startup Environment

This is a well-funded, growing, but lean company. The Controller will perform detailed accounting work personally while the team is small, build processes and systems, and take on work outside a traditional accounting scope when the business requires it. The role is based in the Chicago northern suburbs, with periodic travel by car to the Midwest plant, and involves extended hours during close, audit, budget, and financing cycles. Candidates who have thrived in this kind of environment will find unusual breadth, responsibility, and daily exposure to the President and senior leadership.

Competitive salary and benefits, commensurate with experience.

This job specification reflects the general nature and scope of work performed and is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required. Duties may be adjusted at management's discretion to meet business needs.
