Automotive Parts Counter - Job Overview

The Automotive Parts Counter position involves assisting both retail customers and internal service departments in selecting and acquiring automotive parts. The role demands strong customer service skills, attention to detail, basic technical understanding of auto parts, and the ability to manage inventory and sales transactions efficiently.


Essential Duties amp; Responsibilities

  • Assist retail and service department customers in locating and ordering parts
  • Provide information on pricing, compatibility, promotions, and alternative options
  • Review and confirm parts on body shop estimates
  • Answer phone inquiries and provide accurate price quotes
  • Pull, fill, and tag parts orders; maintain order accuracy and timeliness
  • Track and manage back-ordered or special-ordered parts
  • Coordinate with technicians, service advisors, and outside sales staff
  • Process payments, issue credits, and ensure accurate billing
  • Maintain clean, organized workspaces and equipment
  • Participate in product training and maintain knowledge of new parts and updates
  • Document lost sales and support inventory replenishment
  • Assist with shipping, delivery, and pick-up of parts
  • Handle shop tool distribution and documentation
  • Perform clerical duties such as recordkeeping for invoices, estimates, and parts orders

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

One of the following is typically required:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1–6 months of related training or experience
  • Or equivalent education/experience

Language Skills

  • Ability to read/write basic instructions and correspondences
  • Comfortable speaking with customers and coworkers
  • Can present information clearly in small group settings

Math Skills

  • Basic arithmetic and familiarity with percentages, ratios, and simple calculations
  • Ability to compute discounts, volume, and pricing

Reasoning Ability

  • Strong common-sense thinking
  • Can follow written and oral instructions
  • Able to problem-solve in routine, standardized situations

Physical Demands amp; Work Environment

  • Physical requirements may include standing for extended periods, lifting parts, and operating equipment
  • Work environment includes a combination of office, parts warehouse, and shop settings
  • Safety awareness and adherence to procedures is essential
