Job description

New Orleans, LA: Flexicrew Technical Services (FTS) is seeking a NIGHT SHIFT (4:30 PM – 12:30 AM) Sandblaster/Painter responsible for preparing and coating marine vessels, structural steel, and related equipment. This position performs abrasive blasting to remove rust, paint, scale, and other contaminants before applying industrial coatings in accordance with project specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. Work is performed in a shipyard or industrial environment and may require working outdoors, at heights, and in confined spaces.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform abrasive blasting to clean and prepare steel and metal surfaces for painting.
  • Remove rust, mill scale, old coatings, grease, and other surface contaminants.
  • Mix and apply primers, epoxies, and finish coatings using conventional and airless spray equipment.
  • Prepare surfaces through sanding, grinding, masking, and cleaning.
  • Inspect blasted and painted surfaces to ensure compliance with coating specifications and quality standards.
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain blasting and painting equipment.
  • Read and interpret work orders, coating specifications, and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Properly wear, inspect, and maintain all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist with general shipyard and production duties as assigned.

Requirements/Skills:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous industrial or marine sandblasting and painting experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of abrasive blasting equipment and industrial spray painting techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate grinders, power tools, and surface preparation equipment.
  • Familiarity with industrial coatings and surface preparation standards.
  • Shipyard or marine repair experience preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts, aerial lifts, or overhead cranes is a plus.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and confined space procedures preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to quality workmanship and workplace safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respirators, blasting hoods, coveralls, gloves, hearing protection, and safety harnesses as required.
  • Ability to work in environments with exposure to dust, paint fumes, loud noise, and industrial equipment.
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends as needed to meet project schedules.
