Job description
Additionally, the Alumni Relations Officer will support data collection and reporting efforts, including the use of involvement codes and systems such as our CRM (JHAS) to track participation, evaluate program outcomes, and inform strategic planning and continuous program improvement.
This role will drive the strategic growth and scalability of Odyssey and related enrichment programs. Responsibilities include expanding audience reach, diversifying formats, and piloting innovative models (such as signature lectures, cohort-based courses, regional offerings, affinity-driven learning communities, and short-form master classes) to increase engagement across alumni and lifelong learners.
The Alumni Relations Officer will cultivate strategic partnerships across academic divisions and cultural institutions, manage instructor recruitment and contracts, oversee promotional timelines, and lead the design and publication of the Odyssey catalog and related communications. The role also includes management of the Johns Hopkins Alumni Book Club and coordination of cross-collaborative opportunities with other lifelong learning initiatives, including Hopkins at Home and Hopkins Journeys. The (Alumni Relations Officer) will also supervise a graduate assistant, providing guidance on program operations, communications, and project support.
The Alumni Relations Officer for Lifelong Learning (Enrichment Programs) will lead the development and implementation, strategic vision, and long-term growth of the Odyssey program and a complimentary portfolio of non-credit educational programs designed to engage alumni and lifelong learners. This individual will oversee virtual courses, in-person excursions, and signature initiatives, including stewardship of the Moser Family Writer-in-Residence program, Alexander Grass Humanities Institute (AGHI) Spark courses, and partnering with external learning collaborators such as Hopkins Edge.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement strategies to engage alumni through events, programs, communications, and volunteer activities.
- Implement strategic programs that foster relationships between alumni and JHU, and other students and alumni.
- Lead the planning of medium to large-scale events and initiatives. Serve as the point of contact for alumni volunteers and/or event speakers.
- Lead programs and committees. Prepare colleagues, faculty, staff, or alumni for participation in events.
- Represent the DOFF and Johns Hopkins University at a variety of functions.
- Identify, recruit, train, steward, and recognize alumni volunteers.
- Engage alumni groups and organizations for support of efforts, potential programs, and collaboration opportunities. Identify areas for growth and development.
- Develop and implement strategies to ensure accurate alumni records and maintenance in the DAR CRM.
- Analyze alumni data, generate reports, and provide recommendations.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on alumni programs, events, and activities.
- Create, develop, and maintain relationships with alumni, donors, faculty, volunteers, guests, and colleagues.
- Lead special projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above, the Alumni Relations Officer will:
- Lead the planning and production of the Odyssey catalog and promotional cycle, coordinating timelines, messaging, and program launches in partnership with communications teams to drive enrollment and program visibility; Develop and execute a strategic vision for scaling Odyssey to reach significantly more alumni globally, including exploring new course formats such as one-time workshops and signature lectures for large audiences (100-500 attendees).
- Design and expand complementary lifelong learning programs beyond the virtual Odyssey classroom, that connect alumni and learners with experiential opportunities, cultural institutions, faculty expertise, and industry leaders (e.g., Odyssey for Entrepreneurs, Odyssey Arts), and flexible asynchronous learning experiences that accommodate global audiences.
- Recruit, cultivate, and manage a diverse pipeline of instructors, with a particular emphasis on alumni-taught master classes, leveraging subject matter experts, as well as faculty, graduate students, and emeriti across disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Three years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional years of directly related development and alumni relations experience.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Proven experience in program development, partnership building, and project management.
- Experience with graphic design platforms (e.g., Canva) and strong writing and copy-editing skills to develop clear, engaging promotional, catalog, and registration materials.
