About A Free Bird

A Free Bird is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization that provides Arts Education to children affected by cancer through creative programs and services, both in person and online. Our talented Art Educators help children to explore their creative side through a range of mediums, such as art, music, acting, writing, and singing. They are encouraged to find an art form that appeals to them, then receive tuition, materials, and guidance. Creativity gives children the inspiration to fight their disease, provides a vital outlet for self-expression, and brings profound physical and mental health benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Edit and proofread written content including articles, newsletters, emails, social media posts, and website copy
  • Ensure clarity, consistency, grammar, tone, and brand alignment across all materials
  • Collaborate with writers and team members to refine messaging and improve content quality
  • Review content for accuracy and adherence to organizational guidelines
  • Assist in developing and maintaining editorial standards and style guidelines
  • Provide constructive feedback to contributors to strengthen overall content
  • Support content planning and organization when needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 1–3 years of experience in editing, writing, or content development
  • Strong command of grammar, punctuation, and writing style
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple pieces of content and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Familiarity with digital content platforms and tools is a plus

What You'll Gain

After successfully completing your 3-month commitment, you'll receive:

  • Professional reference letter
  • Certificate of completion
  • Hands-on experience editing content for a growing nonprofit organization
  • Opportunities to strengthen your editorial, communication, and storytelling skills
  • Exposure to nonprofit communications, branding, and content strategy
  • Valuable networking opportunities with nonprofit leaders, communications professionals, and volunteers
  • Access to free educational workshops and open classes across multiple departments within A Free Bird
  • Experience working within a technology-driven nonprofit organization
  • The opportunity to help share stories that inspire hope and support children affected by cancer

Commitment Expectations

To help our teams collaborate effectively, volunteers are expected to:

  • Commit to a minimum of 3 months
  • Volunteer 5–10 hours per week
  • Attend our 30-minute virtual team meetings every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Communicate consistently and collaborate with fellow volunteers in a remote environment

We're looking for volunteers who are excited to grow with the organization and contribute consistently to our mission.

Our Culture

At A Free Bird, we believe every volunteer plays an important role in our mission.

We foster a friendly, collaborative, and positive environment where volunteers support one another, share ideas, and work together to make a meaningful difference for children battling cancer.

As a technology-driven organization, we embrace innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning to maximize our impact and better serve children and families.
