Construction Superintendent

The Construction Superintendent oversees daily field operations for utility construction projects from planning through completion. This role manages in-house crews and subcontractors, monitors safety, quality, production, scheduling, and documentation, and serves as the on-site point of contact between field teams, project management, inspectors, municipalities, and customers.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Provides operational oversight and leadership for assigned construction crews, including foremen, equipment operators, laborers, and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate daily field activities for crews and subcontractors.
  • Monitor project progress, schedules, production, quality, and material usage.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including daily reports, timekeeping, as-builts, and field notes.
  • Communicate with project managers regarding job status, delays, issues, and upcoming needs.
  • Review and interpret construction prints, plans, and project specifications.
  • Ensure field work is completed accurately and in compliance with engineering requirements, applicable codes, company standards, and safety requirements.
  • Provide daily direction, coaching, and performance feedback to crews.
  • Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and jobsite briefings.
  • Coordinate with inspectors, municipalities, customers, utility representatives, and vendors as needed.
  • Coordinate permits, inspections, locates, right-of-way access, materials, equipment, and project resources.
  • Identify field issues and assist with resolving conflicts, delays, or utility concerns.
  • Conduct hazard assessments, address unsafe conditions, and assist with incident reporting or investigations as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class A CDL with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of utility construction experience.
  • Previous supervisory, foreman, or crew leadership experience.
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility construction, jobsite safety, and field production.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, prints, and project specifications.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, mobile field technology, GPS/mapping tools, and project management systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management or a related field.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Additional utility, heavy equipment, or project coordination experience.

Work Environment:

This role works primarily outdoors on active construction sites in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, mud, dust, and uneven terrain. The position involves exposure to construction hazards, including open trenches, moving equipment, traffic, loud noise, and underground utility work. Overtime, weekend work, and travel to job sites may be required based on project needs.
