Job description

Washington National Opera (WNO) is seeking aย Costume Alterations Lead
to fit, alter, and refurbish costumes for WNO productions of Madama Butterfly and Nixon in China. The Costume Alterations Lead will conduct fittings and manage workflow for Stitchers to complete alterations and finishing. Attendance at evening dress rehearsals is required. Dates: September 28th- November 13thย ย 

Essential Functions:ย 

  • Work with Costume Designer and Costume Coordinators to fit costumes as assignedย 
  • Instruct and supervise Stitchers to alter and finish costumesย 
  • Work in collaboration with Workroom Manager and Drapers to ensure work stays on schedule for each productionย 
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe and inclusive working environment for all staff and performersย 

ย Qualifications:ย 

  • Post-secondary education
    in or equivalent experience with costumeย pattern making, stitching and tailoring
    techniques.
  • Professional experience in the construction and tailoring of menโ€™s and womenโ€™s clothing.ย 
  • Experience with supervising employees, scheduling, and time management.ย 
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.ย 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of various costume construction techniques, including sewing and tailoring.ย 
  • Proficiency in the operation of all costume workroom equipment (Industrial and Domestic Sewing Machines and Overlocks, Industrial Pressing Equipment).ย
