Job description

Description:

Scrap Management Industries is seeking a full-time general laborer to work in our Ottawa scrap yard. This position would be responsible for performing a variety of duties including identifying/sorting materials, light maintenance or clean up duties, and interacting with customers.


Requirements:
  • Sort materials, into appropriate containers for recycling.
  • Clean recycling yard by sweeping, raking, picking up broken glass and loose paper debris, or moving barrels and bins.
  • Sort metals to separate high-grade metals, such as copper, brass, and aluminum, for recycling.
  • Deposit recoverable materials into chutes or place materials on conveyor belts.
  • Operate balers to compress recyclable materials into bundles or bales.
  • Clean materials, such as metals, according to recycling requirements.
  • Load and unload scrap metal from customers
  • Sort and package material
  • Manually move material from one place to another-Pack or wrap material by hand
  • Ensure a clean, safe and orderly workplace; clean and prepare sites by removing debris and possible hazards
  • Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures.
  • Follow instructions from Yard Supervisors
  • Adhere to operating and health and safety protocols
  • All other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Ability to use variety of hand tools such as snip cutters, brooms and shovels
  • Ability to operate a forklift in a safe manner
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently
  • Ability to work overhead, climb ladders, kneel, and stand for long periods
  • Ability and desire to work in all elements, such as rain, snow, cold, heat, etc.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations, manage time, and multitask
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both spoken and written form

Working conditions

Working conditions are normal for a heavy industrial manufacturing environment. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, safety vest, hearing protection, and steel toed work boots, with metal sole liners. As in most manufacturing jobs, the environment can be loud/noisy and dusty. Subject to regular bending, twisting, reaching, working overhead, working above ground and/or on irregular surfaces.


Physical requirements

Lift and carry up to 50 pounds for long periods of time, sit or stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs daily to reach work area. Position requires individual to: sit, bend at waist, twist upper body, stand, walk, and/or otherwise move around a steel scrap yard environment up to 10 hours per day.
