Sisu Refuge is a nonprofit farmed animal sanctuary launching a pilot program focused on advancing medical data collection and long-term health tracking for large-breed pigs in sanctuary settings.

We are seeking a paid intern with veterinary, animal science, or vet-tech training to support hands-on animal care, medical record organization, and data collection under veterinary guidance. This role is ideal for students or early-career professionals seeking meaningful, real-world experience in sanctuary medicine and herd health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with animal handling during exams, treatments, and procedures
  • Organize and maintain medical records (digital and physical)
  • Track weights, medications, lab results, and treatment timelines
  • Assist with data collection for a pilot health-tracking program
  • Support veterinarians and senior staff during scheduled care days
  • Help standardize protocols to support future sanctuary research efforts

Hands-On Training & Learning Opportunities

This paid internship includes supervised, on-site training in sanctuary animal care and veterinary support tasks. Depending on experience and comfort level, the intern may assist with:

  • Vaccine preparation and administration under veterinary or senior staff guidance
  • Collection and handling of fecal samples for parasite monitoring
  • Animal restraint and handling techniques appropriate for large-breed pigs
  • Documentation of treatments, vaccines, and lab results
  • Supporting seasonal herd health initiatives throughout the summer

This Role Is a Good Fit If You Are

  • Enrolled in or recently completed a veterinary technician, animal science, or pre-vet program
  • Interested in sanctuary medicine, animal welfare, or applied veterinary research
  • Comfortable with both hands-on animal care and detailed record-keeping
  • Seeking paid, meaningful field experience in a non-production animal care setting

This role is designed to provide substantive, real-world experience for individuals pursuing veterinary medicine, veterinary technology, or animal science pathways.

  • Are you currently enrolled in or planning to apply to a veterinary, veterinary technician, or animal science program? If yes, please briefly describe.
  • What interests you most about hands-on training in herd health tasks such as vaccines, fecal sampling, and medical record tracking in a sanctuary setting?
