Job description

An AI search specialist runs a program to keep pages ranking on Google and to secure a brand name within AI assistant answers. The role spans SEO fundamentals, AI engine content strategies, and technical readiness across verticals such as e‑commerce, home services, and dentistry.

Entry – Learn both surfaces

Entry responsibilities include mastering on‑page basics, internal linking, site crawlability, and foundational SEO tasks that feed AI visibility.

  • Understand Google ranking fundamentals and apply them to core content.
  • Identify and resolve crawl issues that hinder both search engines and AI assistants.
  • Know the intersection between traditional SEO assets and AI citation opportunities.

Progress to proficiency when you can evaluate the top 10 page positions, diagnose SEO gaps versus AI gaps, and justify actions for both.

Understanding AI Engine Selection

Info on how AI engines decide which source to cite, separate from Google ranking decisions.

  • Recognize that only a small portion of AI‑cited URLs also rank in Google’s top 10.
  • Differentiate AI overviews, search box answers, and chat outputs per vertical.
  • Explain why being cited by an engine requires more than a high Google rank.

Proficiency requires the ability to analyze engine citations, reason about their selection, and articulate the difference between ranking and citation.

Prompt Audit

Run systematic ask‑based audits to measure current AI visibility and track improvement.

  • Generate a 15‑20 prompt list tailored to the business vertical.
  • Record mention and citation rates against competitors.
  • Re‑run audits on a repeated schedule and compare results.

Proficiency means producing an audit report and using the data to refine SEO/AI roadmap.

One Roadmap, Two Outcomes

Manage classic SEO and AI‑search work from a unified plan.

  • Prioritize technical fixes and template changes that benefit both Google ranking and AI citation.
  • Track roadmap items with outcome tags (Google ranking, AI citation, or both). Avoid duplicate grids.
  • Maintain a single backlog for all SEO/AI tasks.
Scale AI Production Without Duplication

Generate content that is distinct, crawlable, and not flagged as duplicate by engines.

  • Deduplicate product, city, and office pages using templates.
  • Ensure content is machine‑readable and does not rely on proprietary scripts or PDFs.
  • Validate that AI assistants can index and cite the pages.
Addressing AI Crawlability Blockers

Identify and fix any technical barriers that prevent AI assistants from crawling or indexing content.

  • Remove login walls, heavy scripting, or blocked bots that hinder retrieval crawler access.
  • Audit robots.txt, firewall rules, and bot‑management layers.
  • Confirm crawler visibility through comparative test queries.
Reporting Visibility and Leadership Briefing

Consolidate rankings, traffic, and citation data into a single dashboard for leadership.

  • Separate lost traffic from replaced clicks in AI overviews.
  • Illustrate AI citation share growth with real metrics.
  • Provide clear recommendations for next steps.
Signs Your Business Needs One Hybrid Search Hire
  • Only one searchable role is funded, covering both Google and AI visibility.
  • Customers discover competitors via AI while current rankings decline.
  • Site contains near‑duplicate content or offers data behind login/bot barriers.
  • No separate pricing, SEO or AI teams exist.
