Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
The SafeRide Shift Lead assists with the daily operation of Chapman University's SafeRide program by providing leadership, oversight, and support during assigned shifts.
This position serves as a lead student employee responsible for promoting safe transportation services, ensuring adherence to departmental procedures, supporting SafeRide staff, and delivering excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Shift Lead may serve in multiple operational roles, including driver, dispatcher, navigator, and peer mentor, while helping maintain a safe and efficient transportation environment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and support to SafeRide employees during assigned shifts and serve as a resource for questions and operational guidance.
  • Operate SafeRide vehicles safely and professionally while transporting students, faculty, staff, and visitors within designated service areas.
  • Assist with maintaining a safe and welcoming environment while providing excellent customer service.
  • Serve as a dispatcher or navigator as needed, including monitoring ride requests, coordinating service operations, and communicating with drivers via two-way radio.
  • Answer phones and assist customers with questions regarding SafeRide services, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Support passengers with boarding and exiting vehicles as needed.
  • Monitor shift operations and help ensure compliance with departmental guidelines, policies, and safety procedures.
  • Assist with training, mentoring, and supporting new SafeRide employees.
  • Complete nightly activity logs, reports, and documentation related to service operations, incidents, and observations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, reliability, and sound judgment while representing Public Safety.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving operational concerns and communicating issues to Public Safety supervisors.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Public Safety leadership.

Required Qualifications
  • Successful completion of at least one semester as a SafeRide employee.
  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively lead peers and serve as a positive role model.
  • Reliable attendance and availability to work evening and late-night shifts.
  • Basic computer and technology skills.
  • Valid driver's license and approval to operate university vehicles, if assigned driving responsibilities.
  • Must possess a current, valid driver's license and either have a minimum of three (3) years of licensed driving experience or be at least 21 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and DMV driving record check required for final candidate(s).

Desired Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of SafeRide service areas, routes, policies, and procedures.
  • Previous leadership, supervisory, mentoring, or team lead experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, motivate, and support fellow student employees.
  • Prior experience in customer service, transportation services, dispatching, or public safety operations.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Federal Work-Study eligibility preferred.
  • Clean driving record and experience operating passenger vehicles.
