Formerly known as Modern Pattern Engineers, the company specializes in traditional patterns and molds, lost foam tooling and equipment, machining of large castings and weldments, and complex machined components. Scenic Industries operates advanced CNC turning and milling centers, including Mazak QT250 lathes, 3 and 5-axis HAAS machining centers, multiple vertical and horizontal machining centers, and large vertical lathes. The company’s engineering team uses Solidworks for design and modeling, enabling precision, reliability, and high-quality manufacturing solutions for a diverse customer base.


Role Description The CNC Machining Technician is a full-time, on-site role based in Chattanooga, TN. This role is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring CNC 3 and 5-axis milling centers to produce tooling and mold components according to engineering drawings, models and specifications. Daily tasks include following job instructions to set up machines, selecting appropriate tooling, loading and adjusting programs, performing test runs, and inspecting parts using measurement instruments to verify quality. The technician will perform routine machine checks, identify and resolve machining issues, and collaborate with engineers and other team members to optimize productivity and maintain safety standards. The role also involves maintaining accurate production records, following established procedures, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives in the shop.


Qualifications:


CNC Machining Technician

CNC Machining Technicians are skilled members of our manufacturing operations teams. These technicians will be responsible for the specialized manufacturing of 3D components, molds, tools and patterns and related components used in  manufacturing processes, particularly foundry tooling. Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

PRIMARY REQUIREMENTS:

·        Minimum experience of 3 years directly machining 3D components, tooling, molds, patterns or similar using CNC mills and lathes.

·        Safely and efficiently, operate HAAS 3-axis and 5-axis vertical mills unassisted. This includes setting up and indicating vices, work holding, setting up and checking tooling (run-out, tool diameter, etc.)

·        Proficient at working with tool offsets and work offsets and making adjustments to bring components into specification.

·        Diligent in following work instructions including; set-up sheets, tool lists, CAM programs, part set-up and work piece orientation to machine 2D and 3D part features to produce pattern and mold geometries and profiles. 

·        Insure fit, form and function between mating components – parting lines, mold cavities, inserts, etc.

·        Understand and effectively use measuring devices to inspect and verify 2D and 3D machined components.

·        Maintain a neat and clean work area including daily housekeeping and Total Productive Maintenance on equipment.

·        Capable of planning work and work-flow to multi-task keeping multiple machines set-up and running.

·        Experience with Mastercam programming a benefit, but not required.

·        Personal tools and measuring devices

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS

·        Assemble, manufacture, modify, repair, and maintain molds and tools for the foundry industry.

·        Works to very close tolerances (+/- 0.002)

·        Operates various standard machine tools and tool making machinery (i.e. mills, lathes, etc.) to support the production of tooling and molds.

·        Perform welding operations (MIG, TIG, carbon, stainless, aluminum, etc.)

·        Must be capable of making and assembling new tools from raw materials

·        Must be capable of determining sequence of machine operations, etc.

·        Assembles and disassembles tools and molds for production, repair and maintenance purposes.

·        Performs various types of bench work including stoning, polishing, and assembly

·        Matching cavities

·        Investigates molding problems and offers suggestions on how to improve tool designs

·        Works with little supervision and independently

·        Responsible for good housekeeping in the work area and follows all safety policies, procedures, and rules

Requirements to Apply:

·        Minimum of a high school diploma/GED, 3-years experience in 3D machining, tooling or mold-making field.

·        Must be journeyman mold-maker or have extensive work experience in the construction of new pattern and mold tooling with the skill to do original work and actual mold construction or repair without direct supervision

·        Must be skilled at operation various types of mold-making equipment and machinery, including milling machines, lathes, grinders, EDM machines, CNC machines, etc.

·        Must be skilled at reading blueprints, charts, and tables

·        Must have thorough knowledge of principles of operation of mold-making tools, machining methods, and typical mold tooling material

·        Must have skills necessary to perform bench work including matching, polishing, stoning, and assembly

·        Must be able to identify and distinguish between all colors in the spectrum

·        Must be able to understand and comply with the standard operating procedures for all functions

·        Must be able to read, write, and speak in fluent English

·        Must be available to work a reasonable amount of daily and/or weekend overtime

·        Must be physically and mentally capable of performing all responsibilities and essential elements of the job within reasonable expectancy
