Job description

Job Summary
This is an On-Call position and varies in hours supporting our kitchen staff. You need to be available during basic elementary school hours. Please read the job description before applying. Our kitchens are very fast-paced, clean and enjoyable to work in.
Job Description / Essential Elements:
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the general direction, performs a variety of duties related to food preparation and food service; maintain food service facilities in a clean and sanitary condition; collects lunch money and lunch cards; performs other related duties as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Participates in the preparation of a wide variety of food items, including but not limited to, meats, main dishes, baked goods and sandwiches; package and wrap food items according to established procedures and portion control.
  1. Follows standardized recipes.
  2. Sets-up serving areas and steam tables; serves food to students and staff.
  3. Maintains work areas in a clean and sanitary condition; cleans kitchen utensils and equipment.
  4. Collects money and operates computerized meal card system; bags and prepares money for bank deposits.
  5. Prepares a variety of routine reports related to food consumption, moneys collected and inventory.
  6. Assist in the preparation and service of food; chop, mix, slice, and grate, various food items.
  7. Operates a variety of standard kitchen equipment, including but not limited to, oven, slicer, mixer, steam table and warmer.
  8. Receives, checks and stocks deliveries; assures food items and supplies are stored properly.
  9. Assists with monthly inventory as directed.
  10. Coordinates with Food Service Manager regarding service needs.
  11. Operates kitchen and maintains records in the absence of the Food Service Manager.
  12. Performs related duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge Of: Sanitation and safety practices related to cooking and serving food. Standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements.
  1. Methods of preparing and serving food in large quantities.
  2. Record keeping techniques.
  3. Basic food preparation, including but not limited to, cutting and assembling food and ingredients.
  4. Proper methods of storing food items and supplies.
  5. Interpersonal skills using patience and courtesy.
  6. Health and safety regulations.

Ability To:
  1. Perform a variety of duties related to food preparation and service.
  2. Maintain food service facilities in a clean and sanitary condition.
  3. Collect money and make change quickly and accurately.
  4. Complete work with many interruptions.
  5. Meets schedules and timelines.
  6. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  7. Work cooperatively with others.
  8. Operate a variety of kitchen equipment.
  9. Read recipes and measure food items accurately.
  10. Prepare simple records and reports.
  11. Follow sanitary and safety standards required in food handling.
  12. Maintain confidentiality of school and student information.
  13. Effectively speak, read and write in English.
  14. Understand normal conversations and oral instructions
  15. Operate a computer terminal.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent is desirable, or any combination equivalent to sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Elementary or secondary school kitchen and cafeteria environment.
  2. Subject to standing, lifting, bending, stooping or walking for long periods.
  3. Subject to exposure to sunlight and other outside conditions.
  4. Subject to heat and cold from kitchen equipment.

PHYSICAL ABILITES:
  1. Seeing to inspect documents and to read fine print; depth perception to file;
  2. Hearing and speaking to communicate with others in a normal voice in person and on telephone;
  3. Speak clearly to communicate with parents; staff and others;
  4. Standing alternately for extended periods of time;
  5. Climbing stairs and ladders;
  6. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate kitchen equipment;
  7. Write legibly; bending and stooping; reaching overhead and above shoulders; lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds.

This is an On-Call positions, part time. You will be notified of available jobs via computer, so having one and knowing how to use it will be helpful to accept jobs.
