Summary: The Veteran Peer Support Specialist is responsible for providing direct service to clients, and for facilitating the smooth day-to-day operation of the program. The Peer Advocate collaborates as a member of the multidisciplinary team (Treatment Team) to deliver effective treatment. This position supports the program for Veteran's within Montare's Tucson AZ campus.
The Veteran Peer Support Specialist serves as a vital member of the treatment team, providing peer support, mentorship, advocacy, and engagement to veterans receiving inpatient psychiatric treatment. Utilizing lived military experience and recovery principles, this position helps veterans remain engaged in treatment, reduces Against Medical Advice (AMA) discharges, improves treatment completion, and assists veterans in successfully transitioning to the next level of care.
This role works closely with admissions, nursing, therapists, case management, utilization review, and the VA to ensure veterans receive comprehensive support throughout their treatment episode.
Essential Responsibilities
Veteran Engagement
- Meet with every veteran admitted to the program within 24 hours of admission.
- Orient veterans to the facility, treatment expectations, daily schedule, and available resources.
- Build rapport through shared military experience and recovery-focused support.
- Conduct daily check-ins with veterans to identify concerns, barriers, or unmet needs.
- Provide emotional support during periods of crisis, frustration, or uncertainty.
- Facilitate veteran peer support groups and recovery-focused activities.
AMA Prevention & Retention
- Identify veterans who may be at risk for leaving treatment Against Medical Advice (AMA).
- Respond immediately when a veteran expresses a desire to leave treatment.
- Utilize motivational interviewing, peer support techniques, and recovery coaching to encourage continued engagement.
- Collaborate with the clinical team to address barriers contributing to AMA risk.
- Participate in treatment team discussions regarding veterans identified as high risk for early discharge.
- Document all AMA prevention interventions in WhatsApp.
- Track AMA interventions and assist leadership in identifying trends and opportunities for improvement.
Veteran Advocacy
- Serve as the primary peer advocate for veterans during treatment.
- Help veterans navigate concerns related to military culture, benefits, family issues, and recovery.
- Assist veterans in identifying personal recovery goals.
- Encourage active participation in therapy, groups, medication management, and discharge planning.
- Maintain professional boundaries while providing recovery-oriented support.
Team Collaboration
- Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
- Communicate veteran concerns and barriers to appropriate clinical staff.
- Work closely with Admissions, Nursing, Case Management, Utilization Review, and Veteran Outreach.
- Assist with veteran outreach initiatives and relationship-building with VA partners.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete timely documentation of all peer support services.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, Joint Commission standards, and company policies.
- Maintain accurate records of veteran engagement, peer contacts, and follow-up activities.

Hiring Requirements:
