Upward Bound Resident Assistant

Job Title: Upward Bound Resident Assistant

Position Reports to: Upward Bound Director

Type of Appointment: Temporary, residential - 6 weeks

Salary: $3000 ($11.25/hourly rate, $12.25 hourly rate effective 6/28 due to campus-wide wage increase for student employees)

Position Summary:

TheUpwardBoundResidentAssistant(RA)isatemporaryresidentialpositionoffering supervisionandadvisementtohighschoolstudentsduringtheTRIOUpwardBound SummerProgram.Thisisaresidentialposition.UB is a federally funded program that prepares high school studentstoenterandsucceedinpostsecondaryeducation.The6weeksummerprogramfocuses onenhancingtheacademicskills and personal growth of participants.The primary objectives of the RA position aretoensurethe well-being of program members (grades 9-12) regarding health, safety, morale, discipline, interpersonal relationships,and academics during the residential portion of the UB Summer Program. RAsareexpectedtoresidein assigned campus housing. (Weekend housing may be available ifneededduringoffdutytimes.)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • DeveloppositiveandsupportiverelationshipswithUpwardBoundstudents, mentoringthemonacademic,personal,social,andcollege/careerconcerns.
  • Maintainapositiveandsafeenvironmentinthe residencehalls.
  • Plan, lead, implement, and participate infree-time structured activities for students.
  • Assistinsupervisionofparticipantsatrecreation,cocurricular activities, and meals.
  • Provideacademicassistance, tutoring, and mentoringtostudentsin classroom settings.
  • Assistinmonitoringstudents'arrivalonSundaysanddepartureonFridays.
  • Maintainstudentconfidentialityasappropriate.
  • Assistinhandlingand/orreferring disciplinaryissues to theappropriate staff
  • Maintainand enforce programrulesandexpectations foundintheUWS Upward Bound Summer Staff Handbook.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Participate in pre-summer program staff training.
  • ResidentAssistantsarerequiredtoliveintheresidencehallalongside UB participants.
  • Completedocumentationandreports,asassigned.
  • Required:occasionalsitting and frequently walking up to a mile or more. Most of the work performed is indoors in a climate-controlled environment. Will be expected to work outdoors in summer conditions.
  • OtherDutiesasAssigned.

Qualifications - Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Applicants must be an active college student, a recent college graduate, or a graduate student, who can tutor and mentor high schoolers.
  • This position requires apositiveattitudeandtheabilitytocollaborate with individuals from a rangeofethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Teamworkandleadershipskillsareessential.
  • Preferencewillbegiventocandidateswhohave experienceworkingwithlowincomeandfirst-generationstudentsfromdiversebackgrounds.
    • Priorresidentassistantorcampcounselorexperience.
    • Specialconsiderationwillbegiventoformerstudentsof TRIOprograms.
  • Excellentcommunicationskills(writtenandverbal).
  • Abilitytofollowdirections,completeassignedprojectswithminimalsupervision, prioritize tasks, maintain accurate records and files, complete tasks under deadlines, and analyze/resolve complex problems.
