Job description

Business Development Representative

Location: NW Columbus, OH (On-site + Travel role)

Travel: Periodic regional/national travel for client meetings & projects

Compensation: Base + Uncapped Commission

This is a unique opportunity to apply your knowledge and passion for science within a culture-oriented startup environment and step into a high-impact sales role with autonomous ownership, executive mentorship, and meaningful runway for growth.

Utilizing your background and skills, you’ll partner closely with laboratories, biotech companies, research organizations, universities, forensic facilities, and other scientific environments. The relationships you build will contribute to safer, more effective scientific workspaces while supporting the research, innovation, and progress happening within them.

Sitting at the intersection of science, engineering, laboratory equipment, construction, and business, the organization has established a strong footing in its market. The next chapter requires a self-starter who genuinely enjoys the lab and scientific environment, is energized by sales conversations and solutioning, and wants to build something alongside the CEO and a small team with deep technical and scientific expertise.

This is not a role for someone who wants a defined territory and an established playbook to follow. The right person will be energized by an opportunity where the path is not fully defined, the playbook is theirs to help write, and the impact of their work is highly visible. Success will require curiosity, self-awareness, and the ability to build trust with people across multiple organizational levels. It will take someone who listens well, asks thoughtful questions, learns quickly, and earns credibility through technical conversations, strong follow-through, and a genuine understanding of the customer. Most importantly, it will take someone who cares about the science, the customer, the partnership, and the long-term outcome.

If you are passionate about building from the ground up, want to apply your own perspective and experience to a growing company, and are excited by the opportunity to directly influence your career and success within the laboratory and life sciences industry, we would love to speak with you.

This position will give you the opportunity to:

  • Build and own a book of business within a growing medical and laboratory equipment company.
  • Identify industries, organizations, projects, and decision-makers where value can be created.
  • Research prospective customers and understand business needs and goals.
  • Develop targeted prospecting strategies and build lists of high-value potential customers.
  • Conduct consistent outbound prospecting, with the phone serving as an important tool for creating new relationships.
  • Build relationships with scientists, chemists, engineers, facilities leaders, environmental health & safety professionals, architects, contractors, business owners, executives, and other project stakeholders.
  • Learn the technical applications behind laboratory equipment involving air control, flow control, containment, safety, and related systems.
  • Educate customers on equipment options, applications, specifications, safety considerations, lead times, and potential solutions.
  • Partner directly with internal & external subject matter experts when deeper technical expertise is needed.
  • Understand customer requirements and help translate those requirements into equipment and project solutions.
  • Manage opportunities throughout a sales cycle that commonly spans approximately 90–120 days.
  • Support customers from initial discovery through quoting, specifications, submittal drawings, manufacturing, delivery, and implementation.
  • Coordinate with manufacturers, architects, contractors, installation partners, and other parties involved in customer projects.
  • Remain involved with important customer relationships after the sale rather than simply handing an opportunity off once it closes.
  • Develop expertise within industries or applications you are genuinely interested in and build your own network within those markets.
  • Help refine outbound messaging, sales strategies, customer targeting, and business-development processes as the company continues to grow.
  • Maintain accurate opportunity, activity, and pipeline information within Pipedrive.
  • Participate in important customer meetings, project deliveries, installations, and onsite visits when appropriate.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • STEM-related interest, experience, education and/or knowledge highly preferred
  • Comfortable with outbound prospecting and willing to pick up the phone rather than relying primarily on email or inbound leads.
  • Demonstrable ability in business development, sales, account development, or customer-facing roles
  • Strong research skills with the ability to understand companies, markets, applications, and customers
  • Ability to learn technical concepts and communicate effectively with highly technical customers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the confidence to hold your own in conversations with scientists, engineers, contractors, executives, and business owners.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a pipeline, follow-up activity, customer relationships, and multiple active opportunities without needing significant administrative oversight.
  • Comfortable operating in a small, entrepreneurial environment where systems and processes will continue to evolve.
  • Willingness to periodically travel to customer locations, project sites, major meetings, installations, and deliveries.
  • Experience with technical, scientific, equipment, construction, manufacturing, engineering, laboratory, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, agricultural, forensic, or related environments is highly valued.
  • Experience working with specifications, codes, equipment installation, construction documents, manufacturing processes, or project implementation would be particularly valuable.

What Naturally Makes You a Good Fit:

  • You are a genuine person who cares about the culture and the people you work with.
  • You have grit and are willing to work through the early stages of building something awesome.
  • You are competitive and motivated by growth without being driven exclusively by money.
  • You are curious and genuinely enjoy learning how products, companies, and industries work.
  • You are confident enough to walk into a room without knowing everything and secure enough to ask questions when you do not.
  • You believe in yourself, the work you are doing, and the company you represent.
  • You enjoy developing relationships rather than treating every interaction as a transaction.
  • You like the idea of becoming deeply knowledgeable within a particular industry or customer group.
