What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Marketing Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Marketing Manager, you need expertise in market research, strategic planning, and campaign development, often supported by a degree in marketing, business, or a related field. Familiarity with digital marketing platforms, analytics tools like Google Analytics, and CRM systems, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., HubSpot or Google Ads), is highly valuable. Leadership, creativity, and strong communication skills help you inspire teams and translate insights into effective marketing initiatives. These skills are crucial for driving business growth, maximizing ROI, and ensuring marketing efforts align with organizational goals.

How does a Marketing Manager typically collaborate with sales and product teams to achieve business goals?

Marketing Managers regularly work closely with sales and product teams to ensure that marketing strategies align with business objectives. They coordinate campaigns with sales to generate qualified leads, and frequently gather feedback from the sales team to refine messaging and tactics. With product teams, Marketing Managers help launch new offerings by understanding product features and translating them into compelling value propositions for target audiences. This cross-functional collaboration is essential for creating cohesive go-to-market plans and achieving measurable results.

Job description

About Purple Carrot

Founded in 2014, Purple Carrot delivers clean, long-lasting energy through the power of plants. As the only company in America devoted entirely to plant-based eating, we have spent over a decade perfecting the balance of protein and fiber that only plants can provide. Offering chef-crafted, dietitian-designed meals delivered right to your door, we make plant-forward eating effortless, flexible, and endlessly exciting. Our menu spans quick weeknight dishes, occasion-worthy dinners, breakfast, lunch, snacks, and ready-to-eat meals.

Purple Carrot prioritizes taste and flexibility, offering no membership fees, the freedom to skip or unskip weekly deliveries whenever you want, and a no-pressure, cancel-anytime policy. We pride ourselves on doing plants better than anyone else - and we have the receipts to prove it.

Description

We are looking for a Manager of Retention Marketing to join our mission-driven team. As an integral part of the Marketing department, you will join forces with the Director, Marketing - Loyalty (to whom you will also report) in our continued effort to inspire people to eat more plants!

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about building meaningful customer relationships and bringing CRM strategies to life through thoughtful, engaging lifecycle marketing.

This position will play an important role in strengthening customer engagement and driving long-term loyalty through personalized, data-driven campaigns that enhance the end-to-end customer experience.

As the Manager of Retention Marketing, you will be focused on developing and executing lifecycle strategies across email, push, SMS, and in-app messaging. You'll leverage segmentation, dynamic content, and personalization to create relevant, programmatic experiences, while continuously optimizing performance through a test-and-learn approach.

We greatly thank all applicants; however, only those under serious consideration will be contacted.

Location

  • This hybrid role is based in Chicago, IL, with on-site presence at our Fulton Market office.
  • Our hybrid approach includes 3 in-office days each week, giving teams the best of both flexibility and collaboration. Many team members choose to come in more often - it's a great way to stay inspired and engaged with the team.

On the Plate

  • Lead end-to-end development and execution of recurring, automated lifecycle campaigns across CRM channels to drive retention and increase LTV
  • Own campaign performance across email, push, SMS, and in-app, including deliverability, engagement, and conversion metrics
  • Develop and refine segmentation strategies to deliver highly personalized, dynamic customer experiences
  • Own the design, build, and optimization of repeatable, programmatic lifecycle frameworks across CRM channels, not just recurring campaign execution.
  • Partner cross-functionally with product, data, and creative teams to enhance the customer journey and campaign execution
  • Own the testing roadmap across retention channels, including A/B, holdout, and multivariate testing
  • Leverage customer insights and data to continuously improve lifecycle performance and inform strategy
  • Assist with ad-hoc projects and tasks as necessary

Main Ingredients for the Role

  • 6+ years of B2C/DTC experience with a focus on CRM, lifecycle, or retention marketing
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Proven experience executing large-scale email, SMS, push, and in-app campaigns
  • Experience working with CRM platforms (e.g., Braze) including HTML and liquid logic
  • Strong understanding of deliverability best practices and campaign performance optimization
  • Experience building segmentation, automation, and programmatic campaign workflows
  • Experience building structured testing frameworks across lifecycle programs, with the ability to prioritize tests based on retention, conversion, and customer value outcomes.
  • Proficiency with Google Analytics, BI tools, and SQL
  • Ability to translate strategy into technical requirements for product and engineering teams
  • Able to commute to Chicago office on a hybrid basis

Extra Special Sauce

  • Strong sense of ownership and entrepreneurial mindset
  • Deep attention to detail with a focus on executional excellence
  • Collaborative, cross-functional approach with strong problem-solving skills
  • Customer-first mindset with a passion for personalization and lifecycle strategy
  • Excitement for testing, learning, and continuously improving performance

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this role is $100,000- $120,000. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for an annual bonus based on a combination of individual achievements and overall company performance. Compensation is based on experience and qualifications, and the posted range is not a guarantee of any specific offer.

Garnish

We love our staff, and show it with benefits (including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, FSA, and life insurance), matching retirement plan, generous and flexible paid time off, Purple Carrot box delivery credits, professional development, and the opportunity to work in collaboration with teammates who are passionate about food!

Final Touches

We are committed to a safe and inclusive work environment, free of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, genetics, national origin, ancestry, age, medical condition, mental or physical disability, handicap, veteran status, or marital status.
