Job description

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Operating Room

Reports To: TBD

Provides Direct Support To: 633 Medical Group, Langley AFB, Hampton, VA

Duty Hours: Full-time, approximately eight-hour shifts, typically Monday through Friday. Standard duty

hours are 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with possible shift variations based on mission and

patient-care requirements. The schedule is generally limited to 40 hours per week or 80

hours every two weeks.

Education:

• Associate Degree in Nursing or higher.

• Graduate from a college or university nursing program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in

Nursing (ACEN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), or another accrediting body accepted under

the applicable requirement.

Certifications:

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

• Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

• Maintain all required certifications and complete required continuing education and facility training.

Licensure/Registration:

• Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse.

Experience:

• At least one year of nursing experience after graduation from an RN program.

• Minimum of 12 months of operating room experience.

• Experience must include preparing operating room units, preparing patients for surgery, assisting medical officers or

surgical providers during surgery and conducting instrument and equipment sterilization procedures.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Coordinate patient care in collaboration with surgeons, physicians, anesthesia personnel, nurses, surgical technologists,

and other healthcare professionals.

• Facilitate optimal outcomes related to clinical care, quality, and cost effectiveness.

• Perform physical examinations and obtain relevant patient health histories.

• Prepare patients for surgical procedures and provide appropriate perioperative nursing care.

• Administer medications, provide wound care, and perform individualized nursing interventions within the authorized scope

of practice.

• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and respond promptly in urgent or emergency situations.

• Anticipate potential clinical problems or emergencies and initiate appropriate interventions.

• Provide patient and family health promotion, counseling, and education as appropriate.

• Arrange referrals and specialty care when required.

• Prepare operating room units and patients for surgical procedures.

• Assist surgical providers during procedures in accordance with assigned responsibilities and scope of practice.

• Apply and maintain aseptic and sterile techniques.

• Follow current Association of perioperative Registered Nurses guidelines, operating room instructions, and applicable surgical and

procedural patient safety practices.

• Support the proper handling, preparation, sterilization, storage, and use of surgical instruments and equipment.

• Maintain awareness of surgical patient safety requirements throughout the perioperative process.

• Perform assignments based on unit needs, which may include Charge Nurse, Infection Control Monitor, Nurse Manager for Surgical

Specialty, or other administrative duties supporting surgical operations.

• Direct and supervise care provided by other healthcare professionals within the Registered Nurse scope of practice.

• Make patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel.

• Delegate duties appropriately and coordinate the activities of healthcare team members.

• Communicate patient status, clinical observations, care plans, and required actions clearly and promptly.

• Work respectfully and collaboratively as a member of a professionally diverse team.

• Provide training or direction to supporting personnel when assigned.

• Participate in staff meetings, peer review, in-service training, continuing education, and performance improvement activities.

• Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes.

• Complete timely, accurate, clear, and concise patient care documentation.

• Maintain treatment records and prepare required reports according to facility directives.

• Navigate and document in required electronic health record systems, including MHS GENESIS, after required orientation and

training.

• Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements.

• Follow applicable laws, professional standards, nursing practices, facility bylaws, Department of Defense requirements, Defense

Health Agency guidance, Department of the Air Force instructions, and local operating procedures.

• Adhere to infection control requirements, universal precautions, and procedures for handling, storing, and disposing of infectious

waste.

• Participate in required quality improvement and risk management activities.

• Complete mandatory annual and facility-directed training.

• Lift patients as needed with assistance from team members.

• Lift surgical trays weighing up to 20 pounds.

• Tolerate prolonged periods of standing in an operating room environment.

• Perform efficiently during emergency patient care situations while following established clinical protocols.

• Possess basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Windows-based systems.

• Complete required computer-based and clinical training.

• Satisfy applicable credentialing, background investigation, fingerprinting, security, and suitability requirements before beginning

work.

• Be legally authorized to work in the United States.

• Meet required healthcare worker immunization and tuberculosis screening requirements.

• Maintain professional accountability and a level of productivity comparable to others performing similar services.
