Job description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Operation of a slitter to convert metal coils into smaller coils of specified width based on customer request. Slitter is responsible for operation of the slitting process, quality of the product and the production yield.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned as needed.

Level 1 – Entry Level Assistant

  • Assists the slitter operations in set up and completion of steel coil slitting and recoiling process
    • Must follow all safety protocols
    • Must be able to perform basic math skill including the ability to covert fractions to decimals
    • Must be able to safely use air tools, banding machine
    • Must have basic computer skill
  • Ability to setup tension stand/overhead for operator according to specifications given from operator. Eventually should be able to do math to figure out the setups on their own. This includes changing the tension stand pads to the correct material.
  • Ability to operate the banding line to process coils. IE: tip coils, run them down the line, record weights and print coil labels, operate automatic bander/pneumatic bander, package coils correctly.
  • Assist area lead with cleanup, skid repair and keeping packaging products stocked and organized.
  • Must obtain LOTO and forklift certifications before moving to level 2.

Level 2 – Skilled hourly Production - Additional Expectations/Responsibilities

  • Ability to run the banding line and process coils independently, should also be able to assist the area lead with training new employees on the banding line. Needs to be able to log in and out of jobs including op completing, issuing material, making tags, and following the scanning process.
  • Should have a good knowledge of basic head setting and the ability to process a coil from start to finish while following customer specifications.
  • Be able to perform basic preventative maintenance on the line IE: grease the line according to schedule and make sure the hydraulic fluid levels are maintained.
  • Responsible for ensuring a quality product is being produced and team members are working safely.
  • Ensure quality by observing defined tolerances and completing end of process quality checks
  • Print and accurately label coils according to specifications (size, material type, gauge, shift and operator number)
  • Package and band finished coils
  • Dispose of slit edge material according to material type; maintain a clean workspace
  • Be able meet production rates.

Level 3- Additional Expectations/Responsibilities

  • Complete set up and operate the machine in order to slit material to specific width
  • Maintain slitting machine and equipment by doing routine maintenance; adjust when necessary, using hand/power tools
  • Complete, maintain daily production/quality reports
  • Responsible for making sure that line is being maintained, tooling is clean and stoned, knives and rubbers are being rotated and brought to the tool room when they need to be sharpened.
  • Ensuring that team members are trained properly and are keeping up with their BLR.
  • Makes sure due dates are being met and that the press department has the material they need. This includes being able to react to a change in production quickly.
  • Ensures that paperwork and tags are being done correctly and that the line is running efficiently while producing a quality product.
  • Informs management know about production and maintenance issues so that they can be addressed.
  • Ability to obtain crane certification and be able to safely use the crane to put up coils and swap out slitting heads.
  • To be a high level 3, operator must be cross trained on the CTL/TTL and working towards becoming a level 2 on one of these production lines or another line within the company.
