Contract Certified Surgical Coder (1099) – Specialty Practice

About Us
A growing medical billing software company serving surgical specialty practices is seeking an experienced Certified Surgical Coder and biller to provide coding and billing services as an independent contractor. This position will be responsible for managing the full revenue cycle for services. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly knowledgeable in coding and reimbursement, and comfortable independently managing the revenue cycle while supporting multiple providers. The ideal candidate is also technically savvy and eager to help improve the tools and workflows used to perform the work.
Position Summary
Responsibilities include reviewing operative reports, accurately assigning diagnosis and procedure codes, submitting clean claims, monitoring claim status, resolving claim edits and denials, appealing payer decisions when appropriate, and ensuring timely and accurate payment posting and reconciliation. In addition, the contractor will provide regular feedback on the coding platform and workflows used to perform these services
Responsibilities
- Review operative reports and physician documentation for coding accuracy and completeness.
- Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier codes for surgical procedures.
- Ensure coding and billing comply with Medicare, commercial payer, and specialty-specific guidelines. Submit clean electronic claims and resolve claim edits and rejections.
- Monitor claim status and follow up on unpaid, denied, or underpaid claims.
- Prepare and submit appeals with supporting documentation as needed.
- Post and reconcile insurance payments and identify reimbursement discrepancies.
- Identify documentation deficiencies and communicate coding questions when clarification is needed.
- Embrace and adapt to evolving technologies by utilizing EHR, revenue cycle, and our proprietary coding and revenue cycle platform to optimize coding accuracy, billing efficiency, and reimbursement while maintaining compliance with regulatory and payer requirements.
- Provide feedback on the coding platform, including reporting bugs, usability issues, and opportunities to improve coding accuracy and efficiency.
- Participate in periodic check-ins to share feedback and help refine features and workflows.
- Collaborate with physicians and practice staff to optimize documentation, coding accuracy, and reimbursement.
- Stay current with coding updates, payer policies, and regulatory requirements affecting surgical reimbursement.
Qualifications
Required
- Current CPC, CCS-P, or equivalent coding certification.
- Minimum of 3 years of surgical coding experience. Neurosurgery coding experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience coding complex surgical procedures.
- Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, surgical modifiers, NCCI edits, and global surgical package rules.
- Ability to independently review operative reports and accurately assign codes.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to coding compliance.
- Technically savvy and quick to learn new software; comfortable working primarily in a web-based platform and helping shape tools as they evolve.
Independent Contractor Requirements
- Must maintain an active coding certification throughout the contract term.
- Must provide services as an independent contractor (1099).
- Must have a secure home office and reliable high-speed internet if working remotely.
- Ability to meet agreed-upon turnaround times while maintaining coding accuracy and compliance.
