Job description

DEPUTY CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania | Salary: $290,000–$300,000

Lead forensic pathology operations in one of Pennsylvania's premier academic and healthcare regions.

Allegheny County is seeking an accomplished and collaborative forensic pathology professional to serve as its next Deputy Chief Medical Examiner. This leadership role combines advanced forensic pathology practice with operational oversight, mentorship, quality management, and multidisciplinary collaboration within the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner (ACOME).

Reporting to the Chief Medical Examiner, the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner helps oversee pathology operations while continuing to perform forensic pathology duties including postmortem examinations, determination of cause and manner of death, courtroom testimony, and expert forensic consultation. The successful candidate will also support fellowship and residency initiatives, participate in teaching and research opportunities, and collaborate closely with hospitals, law enforcement agencies, courts, investigators, laboratory scientists, and academic partners.

ACOME offers a highly collaborative forensic environment supported by a full complement of scene investigators, laboratory scientists, and ancillary specialists. The Office utilizes robust Information Management Systems including BEAST and LIMS and provides high-quality digital scene and examination photography for every case. The Office also maintains strong partnerships with UPMC, Allegheny Health Network, and the new College of Osteopathic Medicine at Duquesne University.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school

  • Pennsylvania medical licensure at time of hire

  • Board Certification in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology through the American Board of Pathology

  • Completion of residency training in Anatomic Pathology and fellowship training in Forensic Pathology

  • Minimum one year of post-fellowship forensic pathology experience

  • Minimum six months of management experience

This is an outstanding opportunity for a forensic pathology leader seeking meaningful public service work in a nationally recognized medical and academic environment with extensive opportunities for teaching, mentorship, research, and professional collaboration.
