Position Information

Position Type: Full-Time, School Year
Salary Range: $17.50/hour DOE

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred.
• High school diploma or GED may be considered with one (1) year of experience working with children in a residential setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of child development and positive parenting skills.
• Ability to interact effectively with students, families, staff, and the public.
• Demonstrated ability to provide consistent student supervision and active listening.
• Experience or training in youth services is preferred.
• May be required to possess and maintain a valid South Dakota driver's license.

Job Objective

Provide supervision, guidance, and care for boarding students in a residential setting. Promote a safe, healthy, and structured living environment while supporting students' educational, social, emotional, and behavioral development.

Normal Work Schedule

• 40 hours per week, as scheduled.

General Guidelines

The incumbent will work within the policies and procedures established by the Indian Board of Education for the Pierre Indian Learning Center (PILC). Work is performed under the general direction of the designated official of the Learning Center or his/her authorized representative.

Accountability

The incumbent is directly responsible to the supervisor listed above, or his/her successor, and is expected to exercise sound judgment and initiative in carrying out assigned duties.

---

Level of Responsibility

The Direct Care Counselor is responsible for assisting with all aspects of residential life for boarding students. The incumbent is responsible for the welfare, health, safety, supervision, and security of students assigned to the residential unit, including supervision during evening and overnight hours as assigned.

Representative Duties

• Work with students on an individual basis when necessary.
• Assist students with homework, group activities, personal conduct, and behavioral concerns.
• Be responsible for students' clothing and personal belongings.
• Maintain the care, cleanliness, upkeep, and organization of student living quarters.
• Ensure students complete assigned chores and household responsibilities properly and fairly.
• Inspect completed work and provide guidance as needed.
• Supervise student activities as assigned by the supervisor.
• Promote personal hygiene, appropriate appearance, and cleanliness among students.
• Serve as a positive role model by teaching appropriate table manners, courtesy, respect, responsibility, and healthy living habits.
• Encourage students to properly care for their personal belongings while residing at Pierre Indian Learning Center.
• Respond immediately to student incidents, complete required follow-up, and prepare accurate and timely incident reports.
• May be required to physically manage students between the ages of 6 and 16 when necessary and in accordance with approved training and Center policies.
• Administer medications only after obtaining required medication certification and maintaining current certification.
• Maintain student safety and security at all times.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to move throughout the residential facility to supervise students and ensure their safety.
• Ability to lift and carry 20 pounds or more.
• Ability to physically intervene with students when necessary and in accordance with approved training and policies.

Licenses and Certifications

• Must obtain and maintain Medication Administration Certification.
• May be required to possess and maintain a valid South Dakota driver's license.

In-Service Training Requirements

The incumbent shall attend all required departmental and Center-wide training sessions to broaden knowledge of PILC programs, student development, safety procedures, and residential operations.

The incumbent shall maintain a professional demeanor at all times and protect the confidentiality of students, families, staff, and all sensitive information in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
