Job description

2027 Frances E. Malamy Research Fellowship
The Frances E. Malamy Research Fellowship supports independent research projects that utilize the Phillips Library archival and manuscript collections. Fellowships awarded may be taken in the calendar year following an accepted application. The recipient receives a $5,500 stipend, payable in two equal installments: one at the midpoint of the fellowship and the other upon its successful completion.

Fellowship requirements are listed below:

  • Research must be centered in the library's archives and manuscripts collections.

  • The fellowship requires in-library research for a minimum of eight weeks, not to be divided into more than two terms.

  • The program culminates in the submission of a research summary for the benefit of the library's audiences, typically a public lecture or discussion. PEM reserves the right to publicize the resulting product to promote research within the collection.

  • This fellowship is available to U.S. citizens, green card holders, and holders of an F1 student visa or a J1 practicum/training visa.

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Collections Access and Use: The application should list specific manuscript collections held by the Phillips Library, and how they will be utilized to support the research.

Research Topic: The proposed project can address a broad array of fields, including but not limited to: history, literature, art history, African American studies, American studies, women's and gender studies, anthropology, sociology, religious studies, and the histories of museums and collecting objects. The research topic should be innovative with the potential to advance scholarship, museum practice, or public understanding.

Quality of the Proposal: The proposal should present clear research objectives, a well-defined methodology, a feasible work plan for research at the Phillips Library, and a compelling case for the project's originality, significance, and potential impact.

Letter of Recommendation: The letter should be written by someone familiar with the applicant's research abilities and should address the applicant's qualifications, the significance of the proposed research, and the applicant's potential to successfully complete the fellowship.

To be considered for this fellowship, please have your research proposal, cover letter, and resume/CV submitted by Sunday, October 25, 2026. The research proposal should be no more than 1,500 words outlining the research project, specific collections in the library to support the project, and the desired end product for the work.
