Overview

EMS Biller and Coderย 

Office Location: ELMHURST, IL - Not a remote positionย 

We are currently looking for an EMS Biller and Coder to join our Billing Department team!ย  Below lists the duties, responsibilities and the qualifications needed for this position.ย ย  We will train the right individual!ย 

The EMS Biller and Coder are responsible for scrubbing sites for active health Insurance while complying with insurance, local, state, and federal billing.ย ย  The EMS Biller and Coder are liable for adding appropriate key identifiers from the Patient Care Reports with coordinating ICD codes.ย 

All representatives will conduct insurance verification as needed and are required to complete prebilling training to qualify for the role.ย 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the EMS Biller and Coderย 

  • ReviewsPatient Care Report thoroughly, utilizing all available documentation to establishmedical necessity, selection of levels of service, origin/destination modifiers and the patient's condition at time of transport.ย 
  • Keeps an open line of communication with internal and external departments in a professional, tactful manner to obtain missing documentation or to clarify existing documentation.ย 
  • Assigns condition codes for the reason(s) of the transport with a minimum of 95% accuracy.ย 
  • Meets established minimum coding productivity standards especially during training.ย ย 
  • Reviews reports thoroughly to bill appropriately while following policies and procedures.ย 
  • Utilizes software applications to complete pending assignments paying attention to urgent requests.ย 
  • Attends department meetings and education sessions to further knowledge of billing and coding guidelines.ย 
  • Places phone calls to insurance payers to obtain patient policy numbers when not available on insurance sites or other available documentation.ย ย ย 
  • Ensure accuracy in data entry and consistent attention to detail while advancing with short keys for speed.ย 
  • Demonstrates knowledge and compliance of insurance, local, state, and federal billing.ย 
  • Ability to complete tasks efficiently both individually and in a group environment.ย 
  • Handle assigned correspondence fulfilling any other duties as assigned by managerial staff.

Key Skills of the EMS Billing and Coder

  • Well-versed with medical billing practices that include an understanding of insurance billing codes, regulations, and procedures.ย 
  • Ability to investigate and resolve billing errors and disputes.ย ย 
  • Effective communication skills with clients, insurance companies, patients, staff members and management.ย ย 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.ย 
  • Must have great attention to detail with high accuracy.ย 
Qualifications

Qualifications of the EMS Biller and Coderย 

  • College preferred but not required;ย Medical Billing or Coding Certified preferred but not required.ย 
  • Minimum two years' experience in customer care, account management or similar role.ย 
  • Healthcare and Auto knowledge is preferred.ย 
  • Must be a quick learner and motivated individual with excellent verbal communications skills.ย 
  • Fluency in second language is a plus, Spanish preferred.ย 
  • Ability to "multi-task" and manage spurs of high call volume / stress.ย 
  • Positive, can-do attitude and with good judgement demonstrating ability to escalate account when needed.ย 
  • Ability to receive and implement feedback.ย 

Computer and Office Qualifications of the EMS Biller and Coderย 

  • Computer literacy is a must;ย Typing skillset of at least 45 WPM is highly desiredย 
  • Experience working in an active office environment.ย 
  • Must be able to work with 2 monitors and split screens to operate multiple sites simultaneously.ย 
  • Must be able to sit / stand for 8 hours minimum in an office environmentย 
  • Must be able to use Word, Excel Spreadsheet, Email, Chat Applications, and other software applications.ย 
  • Must be able to read, comprehend, and apply job-related rules, policies, and procedures.ย
