Job description

Position Summary

The Orthotic Fitter is responsible for measuring, fitting, and adjusting prefabricated orthotic devices such as braces, supports, and soft goods to assist patients with musculoskeletal conditions, injuries, or post-surgical needs. Working under the supervision of a certified Orthotist or physician, the Orthotic Fitter ensures that devices provide optimal comfort, function, and support while educating patients on proper use and care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Interaction & Assessment

    • Greet and assess patients to determine orthotic needs based on prescriptions or physician instructions.

    • Take accurate measurements and select appropriate device sizes and models.

  • Fitting & Adjustment

    • Fit prefabricated orthotic devices to patients and make modifications for optimal comfort and function.

    • Ensure proper alignment, fit, and secure fastening of devices.

  • Education & Instruction

    • Provide patients with detailed instructions on proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of orthoses.

    • Offer guidance on safe application and removal to prevent injury.

  • Documentation & Compliance

    • Maintain accurate patient records, including measurements, devices provided, and follow-up adjustments.

    • Ensure compliance with facility protocols, HIPAA, and safety regulations.

  • Inventory & Equipment

    • Monitor stock levels of prefabricated devices and order replacements as needed.

    • Keep the fitting area clean, organized, and properly sanitized.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.

    • Completion of an ABC-accredited Orthotic Fitter certification program preferred.

  • Licensure/Certification:

    • Certified Fitter–Orthotics (CFo) by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics preferred.

  • Experience:

    • 1–2 years in a patient care or medical device fitting role preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Knowledge of orthotic devices, anatomy, and biomechanics.

    • Attention to detail with ability to follow technical specifications.

Work Environment

  • Orthotic/prosthetic clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, or retail medical supply settings.

  • Moderate physical activity including standing, bending, and occasional lifting of equipment or devices.
