Job description

Consultant in Spinal Degenerative Surgery | The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Company:

Company: The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Consultant Spinal Surgeon with an interest in adult degenerative surgery, in particular less or minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS). This is to maintain capacity and improve delivery of high-quality spinal surgery. The Consultant would join a surgical team of ten orthopaedic and four neurosurgical spinal surgeons, working with colleagues to ensure and enhance effective patient centred care.

The department undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures with particular expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.

This post is a substantive role to undertake adult spinal surgery and help with increasing waiting lists. There is a need to undertake surgery in an efficient manner with an eye to meeting NHS aims of reducing in hospital patient stay. The workload reflects that. The appointee will have a particular interest in adult MIS surgery but a broad experience in adult degenerative spinal surgery. It is essential that the applicant is a well experienced Spinal Surgeon with consultant experience and subspecialty interest and proven track record over several years of delivering high quality effective care to patients.

The department is looking for someone who can help lead clinical and non-clinical care in a challenging national environment. They will maintain a level of competence commensurate with participating in a comprehensive spinal on call service including decompression and stabilisation for spinal cord and cauda equina compression. The hospital services a large catchment area for malignant spinal cord compression and the on call often calls upon those skills.

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest specialist orthopaedic units in Europe. We offer planned orthopaedic surgery to people locally, nationally and internationally.

Our Trust is a very special hospital; big enough to deliver world class services and small enough to offer exceptional patient and staff experience. We offer a working experience unique in the West Midlands and we're always on the lookout for passionate people to join our award-winning team.

The ROH is an equal opportunities employer. We employ people of difference and are committed to growing an inclusive culture, where difference is celebrated, and people feel able to bring their whole and authentic self to work.

We are a Disability Confident Leader and offer a range of inclusive, family friendly and flexible working arrangements and policies, to support our people in the workplace. Flexible working requests will be considered.

The Trust is committed to the Disability Confident Interview Scheme and will offer an interview to disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a vacancy and consider them on their abilities.

If you have a disability and need any support with your application or require any reasonable adjustments to be implemented please do get in touch with the Recruiting Manager for this position so that the team can support you.

The department is looking to grow its MISS offering and thus documented logbook experience of LLIF / ALIF / OLIF / MIS TLIF / MIS PLIF is desired along with experience of navigation, robotics (though there is no current spinal robot available), endoscopy, or augmented reality.

The individual appointed to the post will have completed orthopaedic or neurosurgical higher surgical training and have completed Spinal fellowship(s) with particular interest in adult degenerative spinal surgery. They will ideally have more than a year of consultant level practice (locum or substantive) delivering and leading in-patient and out-patient spinal surgery.

The consultant will join the Spinal On-Call rota providing cover to parts of the West Midlands and Worcestershire. Currently, on call intensity is 1:12. The majority of the workload is elective care commensurate with the hospital setup. It is important to note that this means the position is most suitable to someone committed to providing high volumes of elective work.

The spinal on-call rota is separate to the rest of the hospital therefore, there is no requirement to cover orthopaedic patients with non-spinal conditions. The spinal on call service does cover the BCH although the requirement for operative intervention there is quite rare if a need arisesto operate at BCH in emergencies the patient is looked after by the BCH team.
