Position Title: Strong Beginnings Early Childhood Classroom Aide (3-4 years old)

In accordance with the Agreement between the Detroit Federation of Paraprofessionals and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.
Position Summary:
The Early Childhood Classroom Aide provides assistance to the Strong Beginnings classroom to ensure an environment that allows teachers and paraeducators to provide high-quality student instruction without interruption.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess and provide evidence of a high school diploma or GED certification.
- Ability to exercise initiative, use good discretion and judgment, work as part of a team, and work in a fast-paced environment with minimum direction.
- A desire to work with 2.9-3-year-olds Strong Beginnings
Essential Functions:
1. Provide excellent customer service to students, staff, parents, visitors, and the community to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all.
a. Greet students, staff, parents, visitors, and the community warmly.
b. Engage respectfully in tone, body language, and verbal communication with students, staff, parents, families, visitors, and the community.
c. Maintain professionalism in conversations about children and families, preserving confidentiality and privacy.
d. Demonstrate problem-solving skills and the ability to be flexible.
e. Demonstrate good mediation and conflict resolution skills.
2. Route all family questions and concerns about children and classroom activities to the teacher.
3. Greet and assist children with their belongings, at arrival and dismissal. Ensure families sign in and out each day.
4. Escort students to and from bus transportation each day and sign students in/out.
5. Assist in the preparation and setup of classroom activities and materials, including:
a. Keep shelves and materials organized and labeled to reflect home languages of all students.
b. Keep surfaces free of clutter.
c. Ensure learning materials are ready for use by students throughout the day
d. Restock consumables as necessary throughout the day.
6. Observe students during choice time and offer redirection or logistical support as needed.
7. Monitor classroom while teacher presents individual and/or small-group lessons.
8. Consult with teacher and assistant teacher regularly around specific expectations of children in the learning environment to ensure students know what to do and are receiving the support needed to be safe and successful.
9. Manage the delivery, supervision, and engagement of students in family-style meals in the Strong Beginnings classroom with minimum supervision, including:
a. Prepare food in serving containers for the students to serve themselves and engage in meaningful conversations with students during family-style meals.
b. Clean and sanitize tables and food prep area according to State of Michigan licensing 3-step process.
c. Keep a record of materials needed to support family-style meals and work with kitchen staff to replace low or missing items.
d. Support students as they set the table and as they clean up after the meal.
e. Clean the refrigerator weekly and on demand as needed and document refrigerator/freezer temperature daily (if applicable).
f. Rotate foods (using older foods first).
g. Engage in conversational feedback loops with children throughout the meal
10. Clean and sanitize toys and materials daily using the 3-step process.
a. Prioritize frequently used toys by cleaning them daily.
b. Other toys should be cleaned weekly.
11. Assist students with Rest Time preparation.
a. Create a map of where cots will be placed daily, ensuring spacing between cots as outlined by Michigan licensing rules and regulations.
b. Assist children in putting cots in their assigned spaces.
c. Assist children with placing bedding on their assigned cot.
d. Clean cots on a weekly basis or as needed.
e. Gather soiled linens for laundry service or wash them weekly (or as needed).
g. Keep a record of materials needed to support laundering and work with lead teachers to replace low or missing items.
12. Alongside the paraeducator, manage toileting responsibilities and support for students, including, following Child Care Licensing diapering procedures.
13. Supervise student outdoor time in accordance with Strong beginnings curriculum, implementation manual, and LARA Childcare Licensing guidance:
a. Engage in children's play and conversations.
b. Engage in active supervision practices as outlined by Michigan Childcare Licensing.
14. Assist the classroom teacher on field trips and any other out-of-classroom learning opportunities.
15. Support the enrollment process as needed
16. Supervise and engage with students as outlined in the Strong Beginnings Implementation Manual and Child Care Licensing requirements.
17. Complete mandatory LARA Child Care Licensing trainings within the required time frame upon time of hire, including:
a. Strong Beginnings Orientation
b. Infant, Adult, Child CPR
c. Prevention of Infectious Diseases
d. Shaken Baby/Abusive Head Trauma/Child Maltreatment/Reporting Abuse & Neglect
e. 90-day Trainings
i. Administration of medication.
ii. Prevention of and response to emergencies due to food and allergic reactions.
iii. Building and physical premises safety.
iv. Emergency preparedness and response planning.
v. Handling and storage of hazardous materials and appropriate disposal of bio-contaminants.
vi. Precautions in transporting children, if applicable.
vii. Child development.
18. Obtain 24 hours of Professional Development and training per school year (LARA Child Care Licensing trainings above count towards Professional Development hours)
19. Create and maintain current and accurate MiRegistry profile
20. Obtain a foundational understanding of Strong Beginnings through participation in available districtwide professional development opportunities related to job description
21. Perform all other assignments as requested by the classroom teacher, school administrator, and as outlined by the curriculum, Strong Beginnings Implementation Manual, and District processes and procedures.
Security Clearance:
Internal Applicants
If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
External Applicants
In alignment with Michigan law, if you are hired to fill a position, you will be required to submit to a Detroit Public Schools Community District criminal background check. Information regarding required background checks will be shared at point of hire.
