JOB SUMMARY
The Athletic Trainer, Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Technician plays an essential role in supporting clinical operations and patient care within physician practices in the orthopedic settings. Working under direct supervision of physicians and advanced practice providers, and in direct collaboration with physical therapists and the Director, DME, this role is responsible for fitting, ordering, distribution and application of Durable Medical Equipment (DME) including braces, splints, orthoses, crutches, and other orthopedic soft goods. The position provides expert support in injury assessment, bracing, rehabilitation principles, and functional or return to play guidance, while ensuring patients receive thorough education on the use and care of prescribed equipment. The Athletic Trainer, DME Technician supports the operational efficiency of the department by maintaining clean, organized, and well stocked inventory areas and may assist with obtaining DME pre certifications and authorizations. Overall, the position ensures high quality patient care and seamless integration of DME services within the clinical environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Fit and apply physician-prescribed braces, casts, orthoses, splints, soft goods, and ambulatory devices
• Educate patients on proper use, care, expectations, and safety for all DME provided.
• Assist physicians, PAs, and clinical staff with procedures including casting, cast removal, splinting, post operative brace placement and room preparation.
• Support treatment plans through exercise instruction, gait training, and functional education.
• Document all care, treatments, and patient interactions in the EMR accurately and timely
• Process and enter DME charges with correct modifiers and documentation.
• Verify insurance benefits, obtain prior authorizations, and communicate financial responsibility to patients.
• Prepare and submit documentation for billing and regulatory compliance.
• Schedule DME appointments, coordinate with approved vendors, and assist with check-in/check-out processes
• Maintain and restock DME inventory across clinical locations
• Clean, inspect, and organize casting rooms, treatment areas, and DME storage spaces.
• Report equipment repair needs and complete minor maintenance as appropriate
• Act as a liaison between patients, providers, billing teams, and DME leadership.
• Provide discharge instructions, educational materials, and follow-up information.
• Collaborate with physical therapists, outreach ATs, and clinical teams to support patient care.
• Participate in staff meetings, continuing education, and required in-services.
• Complies with HIPAA procedures
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in athletic training required, Master's degree in athletic training or related field preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of Athletic Training experience preferred.
• Licensed as a Certified Athletic Trainer in the State of Florida.
• Certification as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• Clinical or DME experience is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with EMR systems (EPIC or Breg Vision) preferred.
